" 10 million flight hours and 2million landings"

doesn't that mean that the average 777 flight is only 5 hours long????

Why not? A lot of operators use the 777 as a short haul aircraft. That's the beauty of it - if you allow me this word in this context -, you can use them in a mixed environment of short, long and very long routes. I know BA does, US operators, SIA, Thai, JAL... 747 also were used as short haul aircraft.

Emirates make no bones about using 777s on short hops. In one interview with the Sheikh, he was asked about their having no short-range, single-aisle types in their fleet and he made the point that on short routes (he mentioned DXB-BAH) they'd rather run a 777 with only half pax - but a belly full of freight.

The 777-200 would be SIA's smallest type at the moment, no?

Pretty much any lower-48 US domestic would be a sub-5 hour also.

in SIA's case, they have said it couple of years back as "intelligent misuse" of aircraft ie 777 and even way before that on the use of its 744s for short hauls, including the really short hop of 35 min flying time between SIN and KUL vv.
This arrangement of using the 777 have made it redundant for SQ to purchase medium range aircraft (after retiring its A310s) just for their relative short-hauls ie between SIN, KUL, BKK and JKT.

That's good for less pollution
Example:

Less flights a day putting everyone into one big plane and that's what i feel should happen.

Why do we need a flight every hour just for the convenience of business travellers? really we don't need them every hour maybe one in the morning and one mid afternoon and one at night.

wtf! if your saying belfast city is a small airport then there musn't be that many people flying out of there thus not having a shuttle service every hour and stop trying to be smart. if you can't see the positives in having a big plane rather than a group of small planes flying the same load to the same airport then your not thinking properly, i'm talking about man-lon size airports i'm sure if you have to have small planes for belfast airport the let it be.

Not true. BMI only run 8 flights in there a day from Heathrow (not quite hourly). And believe me, every time I have travelled it, the flight has been jammed full. Unfortunately there is one BIG limiting factor as to what type of aircraft can be used on a route.........I'll let you work it out.

(You really have to learn to chill out a bit Phil)

o.k then if it's economy travellers then i'm sure they're not bothered about 2 flights a day to save pollution and traffic numbers can't you see any logic to it. and sorry for being sensitive.

Sorry for jumping to sillyness sorry jerricho

S'right mate.

Just to let you in on a story about pax loads and aircraft size (and please somebody correct me if I get this wrong) but a couple of years ago BMI had to stop using their A321s (pax capacity about 190ish) into Belfast City for a while because of a software problem involving flap configuration and the length of the runway. The result was they used their A320s (pax capacity 150ish) and they were packed to the hilt nearly every damn flight.

(Of course BMI would never overbook and offer you cash to fly the next morning )

Just an example of how even an aircraft that is certified to use a length of runway can suddenly no longer be viable.

BTW, what are they using now?

Philip.........why on earth would that be cool?

An airline, suddenly can't use it's planes anymore because of a software problem, and have to use smaller aircraft to do the same job and you think that that is cool?

Why Philip?
