The reason why it is A320-232 instead of A320-200 is due to the fact that airlines customise the last two numbers of the type. I think this is because each airline will have airline specific features on the aircraft.
The only 'real-life' example that I can think of is on the 747-400. One airline may specify that a humdifier is fit, whilst others don't.

Think, not sure, but think that PA28Biggles' assertion is true only for Boeings...

There was a thread explaining Airbus codes but the search feature is disabled as I write this. From memory the A320 came as an A320-100 initially, BA inherited some - you can tell them from the absence of wing tip fences. Then Airbus produced the -200 with updates so that explains the 1st number. The second and third number refers to cabin and engine fit I believe. So it is I think possible to have two airlines with the same codes...

The A320-232 is IAE V2500 powered (-3- being the IAE Airbus designator). CFM56 powered A320s (and A340s) use the number "1", hence A320-111, 214, A340-313 etc.
For interest's sake, "0" is used for GE, "2" for PW and "4" for RR.

But any idea what the last digit stands for?
Early VS A340s were A340-311 (BUS, AEL...). 5th was a 313 (SUN - more thrust). We flew for Air Mauritius (sp?) for a bit, and their's were 312s....
