Why do you want to become an airline pilot?

I have always wanted to become a Pilot from a very early age. I joined the ATC as soon as I could.
I can not think of a better job.
I am currently studying Computer Science at University and planned to get my Pilots licence once I leave.
Sitting in front of a computer every day drives me crazy. The prospect of doing this for the rest of my life makes me shudder...
Like everyone I want to make loads of money but not at the expense of enjoying my life.
I want to work hard at a job I enjoy.
The question should be WHY do you NOT want to become an airline Pilot?

P.S. If I don't try I will never know if I could have made it..

Each to their own. I would love to fly for an airline. I get excited flying a C310 I can't imagine how much better it would be to fly a heavy. Maybe the 'grass is greener' principle would apply and I would grow tired of it after a while. I dont think so but I haven't flown for an airline so I wouldn't know.

Guys, I think Haysoos might have been simulating an airline interviewer ie. why the heck do you want to sit there for hours doing nothing etc. ?? and therefore the whole point of the thread is for us to defend ourselves against such questions.
I'm pretty sure that's what Haysoo's tone was meant to do-elicit a defensive reaction.
Anyway, I personally agree with whoever said that they couldn't explain it-I can't really explain it either-I just love to be in control of heavy machinery.... Maybe I'm just a "control freak", who knows...
Sorry for the apalling grammar in this post, it's 0059 and I'm terribly sleepy...
Cheers

Having worked in a 9-5 job for a while, i really learned what a daily grind office work is. I find not wanting to turn up for work in the morning really demoralising!
Piloting is not like that - varied working hours and destinations make it a much more interesting lifestyle. Also not having anything left to do after your shift makes relaxation much easier, and gives lower stress levels all round.
Flying heavy metal may well be more boring than little planes, but if that's the case, what's to stop you as a bored 747 driver going back to bandits and having a great time again? I personally think you'll get more out of life doing what you enjoy (as long as you earn a crust!).
It's all personal preference of course, and this is just my 2 cents worth

Guy's I think we need to get away from the myth that we sit around for hours in the cruise doing nothing.
If you do that, you're not in the loop.
There is always something to do.
Even on longhaul, ETOP's procedures don't allow you to sit back and do nothing.
Remember, we only ever allow visitors on the flight deck in a quiet period.
I remember when I was line training on the 737-200 as a newbie, a 2:30 min sector was hard work.
Automation helps in the A/C we fly today, but the new F/O's find that it is still hard work, with a new set of pitfalls.
If the original post was designed to elict a response about possible interview questions, then Saysoos failed to make that clear.
Therefore I suggest a bit of work on the old communication skills
Fly safe.

You obviously are a little sad!, flying is fantastic, I get a bit of a buzz knowing that I can hire a plane for an hour with a friend with less hassle than if I was to hire a car!. You sound like someone who is just looking to argue, you have your opinions fair enough, but why voice them here?.

max_cont,
You're right, who knows what haysoos meant, but he did raise a "valid" question, if you see what I mean.
There is definitely a perception out there, that we are nothing but button-pushers, and I wouldn't be surprised if at some stage whilst attending an airline interview, I was asked to elaborate & explain/refute that perception.
Just wanted to clear things up!
Cheers,
AJ

Extremely nice artwork on the first page of this topic !
Hooray for Tor and ickle black box !
And also for CaptWinky with his :b and :rollin
It was a good try !
To answer haysoos :
Besides the obvious it is people like the above who make aviation and who give this perticular job meaning with a big laugh at 3 o'clock in the morning for instance.
Try this sense of humour with pychotherapists (while at visit anyway?)
Cheerio and hooray to us all
