I have just been rejected by OASC and feel like c**p. I failed the aptitudes although the review officer said that I was close to passing; apparently I was let down on the vigilance test...you know the 9x9 grid with the stars and a priority task. He seemed very positive that if I were to return next year that I would get in without too much trouble...I wish that I was as confidant!
Anyway, what I would like to know is:
1) Do you think that he was telling the truth about being close? (I also failed nav aptitudes)
2)Why was he so confidant that I would get through next year? Do your best results carry over from one year to the next so that a good score in hand-eye co-ordination at your second attempt would cancel out a bad score in vigilance the year before?
And 3) Does anyone have any hints on the vigilance test??? Does it involve negative marking?

i have just got a call from oxford a few days ago about training there
i am sorry to hear that you didnt pass the aptitudes but dont let it put you down...go for it again. if he said you just missed the pass mark then he must be telling the truth,i dont think they are going to get your hopes up for nothing mate.
by the way this 9*9 grid thing is that where you have to omit the satr before you can answer the question or something????

Sorry mate I'm talking about Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre (OASC) RAF Cranwell. The 9x9 grid has stars which appear and disappear randomly, as they appear it is your job to enter the co-ordinates of the star to make it disappear(ie.4x6, 2x2, 8x2 etc.); while you are doing this you have to keep an eye out for a small arrow which can appear anywhere on the grid, this is a priority task, so you hit (when I did it) a yellow key then enter it's co-ordinates. You are timed on how quickly you respond.

I always pass my aptitude tests by demonstrating exceptional dexterity and eye hand co-ordination.

Sorry to hear you didn’t get through, but you knows what they say – its the determined ones that make it. If you’ve been knocked back, pick yourself up and start pushing them for the earliest date you can reapply. That shows perseverance, which will very much count in your favour.
The 9x9 thingie, as you’ve probably figured out, is basically a destruction test. The system just keeps throwing more and more symbols at you, presumably to see how you cope under pressure.
Somehow I managed to get my highest score on this test (God knows how) – when it started to get silly, I just concentrated on one section of the grid, as I figured you cannot cancel all of them and constantly scanning the whole grid just wastes time. Obviously you need to keep one eye open for the priority symbols; when you see one of them, drop everything else.
Incidentally, the fact that you’ve sat the tests before will load the next set of results slightly against you (as they figure the experience gives you an advantage over other candidates). However, the fact that you’ve refused to give up and are back for more punishment should more than offset this.

Thanks for the input, it is much appreciated. I have already asked when I can reapply and it looks like sept time so I shall complete my ATPL and maybe start instructing. I only wish I could take a flight test to prove the ability which I am convinced I have. <img src="frown.gif" border="0">

Eagle, that's too bad man. I also failed one sector on the aptitude tests a week ago, except this was for the RAAF. Check out the thread titled "RAAF Aptitude Test Results" on the Military forum. I had a bunch of guys give me some really good advice, and maybe you could use some of it.
I know it feels pretty bad man. But hey, it'd feel even worse if I were to fail again in one year because I allowed doubts to get in my head about my own abilities. Soldier on....or shall I say, pilot on!!

Eagle:. .Only your best scores at OASC aptitude tests count, so when you go back you can only get better scores.
Beware of the nav apptitude scores tho - one of our sky-gods on the UAS at the mo recently got knocked back cos of his poor nav apptitude. They don't seem to care that he is f'ing good at nav for real!
Don't see why they would BS you at Cranditz - they tore me to pieces, and I passed: trust me, they are not in the business of making friends there!

Thanks John, it's great to get some positive feedback. I'm going to quit posting before long because I do not want people to get sick of my posts.
