Bore da FlyingWelshman,
Depending on whether you want to end up flying airliners (i'm not presuming you do) determines where you go. As you have said it will be a fair distance either way.
My only suggestion is that if you do want to end up in an airline, it will be easier to make contacts if you fly out of Cardiff. I know that quite a few guys who used to fly for what was BRAL fly there. On the other hand Swansea is closer and since commercial flights have recently started there there may also be a foot in there.
I hope this helps a little and whatever you do, GOOD LUCK. Keep flying the flag. Hwyl fawr.

My personal feeling is that Haverford West is the best bet. Excellent school, open 7 days a week, and only a short drive away. John Rees owns the school, and Gwyndaf is Chief Pilot of the Airline operation. I am sure that they can sort out a PPL without breaking the bank. If you are destined for the airlines then most people will agree that the Welsh aviation community is a small and friendly bunch!
Well I know most of the Welsh aviation scene...
Nearest are going to be Haverfordwest, Welshpool or Caernarfon.
I'm regularly over Wales either blatting up and down UA25 or blatting around in various light aircraft. See you around!

Crashbarrier, Don't knock it until you've tried it. Thats why God made Wales so hilly, to stop the sheep getting out isn't it.
ps. We charge an entrance fee to keep the tight Englishmen out.

Yup, I can vouch for Haverfordwest too. Great bunch, Gwyndaff is good if you can ever nail him down and almost always rushed off his feet. The airfield has some good ameneties and is a pretty friendly place. Not sure how to get there from Aberystwyth mind.
If you wanna see what they got go here:

Hi boyo,
I did my PPL split between Cardiff and Pembrey. It's true about Cardiff being an excellent place to fly, the only draw back I found was the fact that you could be kept waiting in the circuit/on the ground for commercial a/c to land/take off.
On some occassions this took anywhere between 5 - 15 mins depending how busy it was. This is then 5 - 15 mins your paying for when your just twiddlings your fingers.
On the other hand, smaller airports like pembrey have little or no traffic. Not sure how close this is for you, but I can recommend the club there for quality training at reasonable cost. Mail me if you want any more info / insight into either clubs.

It's definately worth checking out Welshpool Airport.
It's probably the closest to you and its a great little place, very friendly.
They have a tidy looking fleet of tomahawks and a warrior as well as a General Avia F22A.
It's A/G radio and there are several other small airfields within 30 mins, If you want to be more adventurous Manchester CTA is not that far away.
Have a look at:
