Cool A Levels?No hours?

Hello,
How many people on here are doing first year AS Levels, with very little or no flying experience; who are planning to apply to ab-initio's in Summer 2002... I am in this position, but am about to take my first lesson soon. It's doubtful that I'll be able to keep up lessons without some finacial support or something. Just wondered how many other were in this position...Maybe we could keep in contact via. email and see how we are all getting on...

Regards

Mike

Talking

Nice to see someone in the same place...Im predicted crappy grades on the basis of my GCSE's something like C's and D's, but I'm more likely to get A's and B's, I got a B in Physics Module 1, two marks off A...I got a C in Maths P1, but am retaking, going for an A. I got an A in Computing coursework as well...
Get back to me, via. e-mail if you like...tell me what AS's you are doing (exams soon - boohoo) - also, tell me how your lesson goes...

Regards,
Mike

I'm in similar position. Currently in first year of sixth form, about to take first set of AS Levels in June. AAaaaah.

Looking to apply to uni after A-Levels as well as airline sponsorships. Best way in my opinion, if you dont get one, you'll get the other. Just safeguarding your future really. I think anyway....

What do others think????

I'd go with W69 - It's great to see you guys planning to go for sponsorships/flying etc. as soon as you can, but a great & wise maxim in aviation (and life) is to plan for the worst; so that when you aren't burned alive/rejected from BA/married it comes as a pleasant surprise.

Have a back-up plan (mine was pay for it all myself, via a good job, via a degree) for when/if you don't get sponsored on your first application. If you do, hooray! But to ignore the alternative out of optimism or denial is crazy.

Pick a Uni, pick a degree course you will enjoy/do well at, and aim/plan for a non-flying career. Just never stop trying for a flying job en-route...!

Good luck

PS Oops forgot - not everyone wants to go to University, but it is still important to have a plan that doesn't involve living with your parents and working in a Virgin Megastore on Saturdays until you're too old for a BA sponsorship..!

(sorry non-graduate types)

Thumbs up

Definately a good idea to get a Uni place sorted; that can be binned if an airline job comes up.
If you don't get sponsorship first time around a degree shows employers you are motivated to keep learning, and a University with a university air squadron provides a great way of getting some hours of second to none flying tuition. Who knows, you may even decide to fly pointy things with roundels!

At the very least a uni provides a great opportunity to get more qualified (and therefore more attractive to an employer) and visit crap nightclubs on a regular basis - isn't that right Affirmbrest?!

Cool

I visit the crap nightclubs on a regular basis anyway...lol, but I understand what you guys are saying...Uni is definitely a reasonable back up plan. I'm also considering the Royal Academy of Engineering's Year in Industry scheme, the wages from which I could get my PPL with!
There's loads of ways, and I'm gonna apply for 'em all!
I'm sure they won't be too bothered if I turn down jobs/places if I got into BA or something (not that it's very likely, but if you don't believe in it, it ain't gonna happen!)

Anyway, I wish you all luck in your AS's, e-mail me with your results in August!

Regards

Mike

Slightly younger, I'll be starting 6th form in September. I'm working towards going solo gliding on my birthday this summer, but it's a problem finding enough time to work (need the money for glider lessons) and work for the GCSEs I'll be doing over the next 6 weeks.
In 6th form I'm taking Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths (what a combination!). Then, hopefully, I'll get a sponsorship from some airline (any offers gratefully accepted, don't hesitate to e-mail me) although I will be looking at the Universities.

Anyway, good luck everyone,

Yo!

I was in the same position this time last year. I was in my last year of A-Levels, with absolutely no flying experience. I applied to Uni's for courses which had absolutely nothing to do with aviation as a back-up plan. Applied for sponsorship but was too young. Got my Class One Medical, and in June of last year handed over the cash to a flying school for the self-sponsored route.

I am now half-way through my course, and loving every minute of it, although it's really hard work.

Good Luck in your A-Levels and whatever you end up doing, whether it be going to Uni first, or taking the sponsored /self-sponsored route once you've done your exams.
