DPE selecting

Obtaining a Private Pilot License (FAA). The school does not provide a DPE - trying to find one from the FAA list. Talked to instructors and other pilots and found out that there is a huge problem with finding a good DPE to a particular date. Really interesting to study that issue.
How did you choose a DPE? What was the main criteria? I found three available (that`s a huge luck) examiners in a neighboring state at about the same cost.
