EASA ATPL conversion to FAA ATP

Hello everyone,

i hold an EASA ATPL with a B737 Type rating on it, currently employed as a CPT in Europe.
I wish to convert my EASA ATPL to FAA ATP and would like know how to do this by limiting as much as possible travelling to the US for family reasons.

The last time i flew in the US was almost 20 years ago so i forgot everything, what are the burocratic steps to undertake for a licence conversion there?

-Are there places here in Europe to make the conversion to FAA? i mean both the written ATP and the practical checkride?

-Is it possible to do the practical ATP checkride on the 737 sim? ( i know i won’t get the 737TR on the FAA ATP but at least i won’t have to do the checkride on a Seneca, haven’t flown props for decades and don’t fancy spending a lot of money on retraining).

-How can i obtain the FAA 737TR without doing a full TR again? are there shortcuts?

Just interested for the FAA ATP at the moment, without SE or ME Class ratings.

Thanks all for your help.

You can't convert, you just have to meet the minimums and apply. They also don't have class ratings in quite the same way: you can get an ATP ASEL, AMEL, ASES or AMES. (Airplane Single/Multi Engine Land/Sea) you have to take one of those tests as an initial, generally AMEL.
Before you can take the AMEL written test you need to complete an ATP-CTP simulator course, then take the written, then take the check ride.

There is a school (in Florida?) that has approval for the ATP checkride in the Sim, just for the ATP-MEL. I can't remember if it is on A320 or B737.

This results in a slight saving. However the other schools will typically include an abbreviated type rating course, and you would then get ATP-MEL & B737. The extra sessions are definitely worthwhile, as you will practise the checkride profile, which include a few FAA nuances.

Good luck.

Just to clarify:
Yes, and you will get the T/R
Yes, probably 2 sessions plus check
No, the 737 is MEL, you get that too!

Good luck.

I am looking at getting at FAA ATP based on either my UK / EASA licenses and A320 rating.

I wanted to get up to speed on the ATP written before going on a ATP course. Can you anyone recommend the ATP exam prep GLEIM or Sheppard air?

Would anyone recommend Pan Am Miami for the ATP ground school course and A320 rating for someone already flying the type? Or perhaps another company that can offer the ATP and A320 course?

I’ve known many people who have used Sheppard and been happy with their test score. The ATP-CTP class has nothing to do preparing for the ATM written exam. It’s designed to fill the knowledge gap between being a C-172 CFI and transitioning to a RJ F/O in three months. The FAA requires the class for all multi engine ATP candidates no matter what their experience.

You can do ATP written with Sheppard in 3 days and score a solid mid 90.

Yes, some US regionals are providing the ATP-CTP course to new hires.
