You might find this (free) online simulator useful:

luizmonteiro - Online Simulators - ADF Simulator

Having a play with it should be much better than looking at static pictures

Best I can recommend is a book called Never Get Lost.

It has the most detail explanation about just any conventional navigation aid and how to use it properly. I suggest you find it online, you can thank me later

The above mentioned online simulator is actually pretty good for practice. Also have a look at Youtube there are some pretty good videos about ADF/NDB navigation and intercepting and tracking bearings.

If you're willing to spend a few bucks, check out the following link: http://www.avtutorials.com/

This one does an OK job to get you started. Be careful of the nomenclature though. We don't track an ADF. We use an ADF to track an NDB.

Also, learn to fly both fixed-card ADF's, movable ADF's, and RMIs for the same reason as you learn to drive manual transmission. Indeed, starting out with explanations on a fixed-card ADF often helps some students understand the basics, before moving into using a movable card, then bringing in the RMI.

Adf

I used the book Never Get Lost which as said by a previous guy is well worth a read. I also practiced on rant which is a fantastic tool to practice doing anything adf related.

RANT is used by lots of schools. The website is Oddsoft Limited, producers of the Radio Aids Navigation Tutor (RANT XL) - an invaluable tool for instrument pilots and you can download a free trial version.
