CTC Middlesex Degree & Medical/Assessment planning
Hi everyone,
Glad to become more active on here as I am few months away from finishing my IB..
I firstly wanna ask about the CTC Middlesex degree in 'Professional Aviation Pilot Practice', whether it is worth it? It really does appeal to me, giving some context and foundation to aid with the regular, conventional pilot training. And one becomes eligible for student funding, but does anyone know when you complete the degree course. It's presumably still over 3 years like the usual BSc?
Also with regards to applying to CTC, OAA and FTE Jerez or any FTO, in what order do I take the medical and assessment. I live in Denmark and have to book flights/hotels soon to take these steps before applying.
Also, how long are the medicals/assessments valid for?

I can't say much about the Middlesex degree or applying to FTOs, but if you're looking for a uni experience to your flight training have a look at the Air Transport w/ Commercial Pilot Training degree at Bucks New Uni. If you need any information about that, then I'm your man.
I know a couple of Middlesex CTC people, but my info is 2nd hand so don't rely on it's accuracy.
The degree entitles you to student loan funding, great to help with the living expenses (read: nights out) whilst training.
It's distance learning and mostly reflective writing, essays on particular parts of training. All the guys I've spoken to see it as easy and a pretty pointless degree but gets you those three letters. "A crock of $***" is how two of them referred to it as.
If you go through CTC, no airline partner requires you to have a degree, and many people end up at EZY/TCX/MON/RYR/BEE without degrees.
Will it put you at an advantage by having it? Possibly a small one, it depends how well you can talk about its benefit, such as in an interview talking some standard-issue nonsense about how its caused you to improve.
Will it put you at a disadvantage by not having it? Absolutely not.
Only you can decide whether you should do it or not.

Middlesex Degree
Hi Daniel,
I am currently enrolled on the MDX university degree. Its OK if you want a degree but don't expect a huge amount of guidance/support you have to be a bloody good mind reader as to what is expected of you. Not a well organised course really and I wouldn't have bothered had I known what it was going to be like.
It is a distance learning degree. No extra work for the first year just ground school which is good as ground school is very intense as Im sure your aware. When you start your flying events then theres quite a few reflective reports to be written all about 1500 words in total. End of year two theres a presentation to be done and a portfolio. The third year then cant be completed until your with an airline.
Like the other guys have said your at no disadvantage if you don't do it as the degree is not what the airlines are looking for. Really it is only good if you want the student finance to support you through the course.

You could try and fit them both into one trip. You will have to complete the online application for whichever school you choose first and then they will give you a few dates to choose from. Which would then allow you to book your medical before it or after it.
Personally I did my medical before having an assessment, firstly because if you cant get a medical there is no point paying the money for the assessment and also it shows your commitment to your future career and is a good thing to have shown that you've done before you go for your assessment.
Obviously my opinions they can be done anyway you like.
