Hourbuilding USA -Visa,TSA ?

Hi Guys

Can somebody please tell if Visa and TSA is a requirement to do some hourbuilding in USA. I'm only planning on staying for 1-2 weeks. I know it is for flight training in US, but I'm a bit unsure about hourbuilding when this is not "instruction/training".

Nope, it's just like renting a car. You will however require a restricted FAA certificate. It's like $200 or $300 and some paper work which you need to send away to the CAA and FAA. Then you just show up and rent a plane.

Good luck

Just to be clear, you'll want a private certificate based on your foreign license under 61.75. The only "restricted" pilot certificate the FAA issues is the junior bird man Restricted ATP. The FAA does not charge for issuing their certificates but the medical will run ~$100 and TSA will charge you $130 for their background check. And you'll need a record of a flight review in your logbook before you fly on your own.

Okay, thanks. I have a "real" FAA issued PPL/IR when I've been training in US before.
So I don't have to do anything before I show up to do some hours?

Thanks

Ok, then you'll just need a current medical and a flight review in the last 24 months. If it's been longer than that the check out will most likely cover the hour of flying and there needs to be an hour of ground school.

I am assuming you are hour-building in something you are already rated on, and less than 5.7 tonnes / 12,500 lbs

1) TSA - not required (below 12,500 lbs, only required for initial FAA licence, the IR, and the MEP rating; as FAA PPL you could even do a CPL without TSA)

2) Visa - this is dependent on the purpose of your visit. Let's say, you are going to the US to fly around, in the same manner you would rent a car. You would be a tourist and can do it on a visa waiver or tourist visa. If you need initial supervision / training so you can rent the aircraft, that would be fine since the primary purpose of your visit is to fly around.

The good thing about hour building that it is just that - flying around to build experience.

If you are being trained all the time by an instructor, that would likely not be tourism, but it wouldn't be proper hour-building, either, IMO...
