im going to canada in june/july and was wondering if any of you ppruners could recommend and good cheap flying schools for my ppl.i will be in ontario and winnipeg but will travel for a good school.. .cheers

Ottawa Aviation Services. <a href="http://www.oas-inc.ca" target="_blank">www.oas-inc.ca</a> (Ottawa, Ontario). They have a fleet of DA-20 Katanas (stick control column) and G-115 Grob. Beautiful, young aircraft and cost about $95cdn/hour. A PPL will cost you about $8,000 to $9,000cdn.. .Another school in London, Ontario uses Katanas as well but can't remember the name.

AeroBatfink, what are your intentions, just to rent a plane and do some sightseeing or to take some private/commercial pilot training. If you intend doing the latter stay away from NMA. There are plenty of flight schools located across Canada from which to choose.

Depends on where in Ontario you want to go. It's a huge province. I live in Ottawa, Ontario and can say that it is a great place to be, winter or summer. It's two hours drive from Montreal [1 hr in a 150/172 ] (another nice place to visit) and about 4.5 hours from Toronto [2 - 2.5 hrs in a 150/172]. It would be unfair of me to comment on Winnipeg as I have never been, but my wife has, and let's just say it ain't on my list of places to visit. <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

Try Winnipeg Flying Club (they have a web page) They have cheap single room accomodation next to the club... Bldg completed 2 yrs ago. Coffee shop etc... Otherwise try Winnipeg aviation also at St Andrews airport.Cherokee 140's. Winnipeg Aviation is like a Bush outfit, They get the job done...

Hard to say if it's cheaper in Canada than the USA - I'm not too sure on the costs in teh States. You'd have to look at exchange rates and different flying schools in both countries. The CDN$ can fluctuate between anything from $2 to $2.50 to the British Pound. I'd be confident to say that it is half the cost of that in the UK however.

To back up Canada Goose,
Regarding PPL costs, I got mine in Canada in 1997-98. I think when all was said and done I spent the equivalent of about £3,000 in sterling for the privilege. Solo hours can be bought for as little as thirty pounds if the exchange rates are kindly.
It's so cost effective I keep returning, I’m aiming to get my multi rating this summer on a BN2A - the hourly cost of which seems to be roughly equivalent to a Warrior or somesuch here in Blighty.
Oh, and there's some fine scenery, no landing fees, large areas of open sky and some great cross country opportunities.
Cloud Skimmer, if you should happen to venture over to British Columbia I can recommend a couple of schools around Vancouver.
