CPL and IMC Rating
Hi all, I don't know of anyone can help me with this one, I am going through CPL training but running out of cash wanted to do IMC rating afterwards (haven't got enough cash for the full IR yet) just in order to be able to fly in IFR. In lasors08 it says that CPL has IMC rating privileges, but JAR FCL 1 doesn't say anything obviously, as IMCR is a CAA only rating.
So does JAR CPL include IMCR privileges or not?
Thank you in advance.

I believe that the reason for the confusion is that the old UK CPL had IMC privileges, and anybody who still has one still has those privileges. The newer JAR CPL doesn't.

- Little chance of covering the IMC syllabus in only 5 hours
- You'll pay the inevitably higher rate for IR (professional licence) training rather than IMC (private licence rating) training.
- The odds of then doing IR later in 5 hours less than the legal minimimum are pretty slim anyhow.

As a slight thread drift - I can't believe the amount of differences between pre-JAR and post-JAR licensing and how mixed up it all is! Just been trawling through LASORS, being referred on to the ANO, JAR-FCL1 and JAR-OPS1 trying to get my head around it all and can't believe there are all these people operating under different rules with essentially the same licences - such as the CPL IMC privileges explained above and things like UK PPLs issued pre-JAA can fly IFR outside controlled airspace whereas JAA PPL holders cannot, except at night.
so CPLs of days gone by could fly IFR in class D & E, operate VFR down to 1.5km outside CAS, take SVFR clearances down to 3km and take off or land down to 1800m (basically IMC rating privileges), while the modern day equivalent can't operate IFR in any airspace and has the same privileges as a PPL - VFR down to 3km outside CAS, SVFR needs 10km. And the CPL training hasn't changed as far as I know?!
Guess it's all academic though as nobody uses a CPL without an IR

Probably not true, there's a fair bit of UK based work - particularly flying instruction - do-able on CPL/IMC.
Not mainstream passenger flying however, almost certainly. Pleasure flights however should present no problem, crop dusting (anybody do that any more?), parachute dropping, test flying, aerial photography...

...if I only require 5 hours and no test, then IMC it is.
JAR-FCL professional aeroplane licences do not have inbuilt IMC privileges.
The holder of a JAR-FCL professional aeroplane licence who wish to obtain an IMC Rating must complete the requirements specified below:
1. JAR-FCL CPL(A) holder without an IR(A)
To gain an IMC rating a JAR-CPL(A) holder will be required to complete the following:-
