CPL and FI at either Tayflite or OBA??
Hi,
I have been looking to do the 15hr SE CPL course and FI at either Tayflite or OBA in florida and i just cant decide on either?
I need to complete my CPL by December this year as the 36 months expiry will be up by then. I already hold a MEIR so hence the reason for the reduced CPL.
I have visited Tayflite and i completed my PPL at OBA in 2004 so have an idea of both setups.
Has anyone been to either school for the above courses that can voice an opinion that may help me decide?

There's no such thing as a 15 hour course...of course.
It's a MINIMUM of 15 hours.
However, using OBA will give you the chance to fly both the lessons and the test with the same person (the examiner) and as the examiner is the school owner it's in his benefit for you to succeed.
He can find his 40% failure requirement elsewhere - at the "competition".
No idea about Tayflight.

Can't give advice with the benefit of hindsight. At the moment I am planning to complete my flight training at Tayflite after the ATPL exams (all things being well!). However I do know more than a couple of guys who have experience of Tayflite and more particularly of Syd Utting who does the CPL and FI course up at Perth. Generally good feedback on tayflite but nothing but the highest of praise for Syd both professionally and personally. Have a search for "Utting", there are a couple of CPL threads linked to him.
For your info there is a CAA Examiner on-site and I believe another who lives locally. So no issues in regards to test.

The CPL examiner is not the owner nor an employee of OBA
Everyone who has been there recently knows your statement is not true - the part no one can figure out is why the CAA don't do anything about it when it clearly produces impartial unprofessional examining results and don't let other examiners do the same.
PS 50% for CPL sounds about right across a UK CPL.

tatyflite/oba
this thread caught my attention purely and simply because i may be one of the few people around whos has actually done cpl training at both. I started at tayfite purely and simply cause i am scottish so it appealed to me to do it there and because i could weekend it if need be so along with a friend of mine we decided to go there together and do it. We were there for weeks on end trying to get it done and whilst the majority of the problems came from poor weather the lack of interest or drive to progress and fly when possible became a major factor. We were both not greatly impressed by the overall attitude at the school and as a result we both stopped training there and moved. He went to tayside and I went to OBA. We both subsequetly passed at the new schools first time and quickly. Whilst I have said in the past AT can be a grumpy old git at times he was an excellent instructor and gave me all the instruction and advice I needed to pass in the minmum hours and first time and the examiner was a certain moderator who has already posted on this thread. How was also excellent extremely professional whilst at the same time relaxing me and making the test enjoyable...you have my thanks for that paul...and I would certainly choose OBA next time if given the choice. 2 years later I am now in the right hand seat of a 757 and loving it.
So my advice having done both would be OBA for what its worth

If you want to work in the US, do it in Florida. If you want to work in Europe do it in Scotland. I know the Florida schools can award JAA licences.
If your short term aim is to instruct, then best do it at a schools that will offer a job at the end. In the current market, you'll be fortunate to find this, in which case I question the merit of doing an FI rating at all.

I received a PM from the management at tayflite after my comments so I thought I would reply to it on here as that is what it deserves.
He tells me that the management at Tayflite have been there for a year and as such things mave changed. Indeed I did my CPL training there 2 years ago and as such I cant comment on the current set up. Therefore I can only say thats how it was however, in all honesty given the decision to make again I would probably still have gone to florida purely because the weather made quick completion possible.
I sincerely hope Tayflite is doing well and flourishes as I still live less than half an hour from the airfield and it is a pleasant sight watching the arrow pottering around overhead of a morning. Hopefully I will get a chance to come up and fly with them on my days off sometime and sample the improvements my self.

The examiner at OBA is Stephen Fisher. He is also head of training there. I dont care what anyone on this forum says. Stephen told me that he was head of training and chief financial officer and partial owner of Ormond Beach aviation himself face to face with me in his ****ty office. Oba is soon to change names in an attempt to dissociate themselves with their checkered safety record 33 accidents in 15 years. When the industry standard for that timeframe in florida is about 2. Stay far away from this place. Stephen has bankrupted 4 different schools and is well known for his dodgy business practices.
