Can anyone give me any advice, thoughts, reviews, information, etc on CPL training in either Tayside or Tayflite?

All comments welcome....

Visit the school. I'm currently doing my PPL there. Where did you do your PPL?

As I've said, visit the Dundee site or Glenrothes.. depends where you want to train, I live in Edinburgh myself and honestly, it's easier to get to Dundee than Glenrothes , really nice guys and great instructors, a wide range of aeroplanes.. just have a look yourself.

I’ve flown with both Tayside Aviation and Tayflite over the past few years (PPL, IMC, Night etc), but decided to do the CPL at Tayflite (Perth) last year...it was fantastic, I enjoyed every minute of it, and the skills test turned out to be one of the most enjoyable flights I’ve had simply because I felt I had been so well prepared for it by the school. Feel free to PM me if you want to know any more.

neveer flew at dundee or perth, but was there at uni for 4 years- i used to play football on sundays at the riverside right next to the runway...

one day there were some serious crosswinds - and the majoirty of planes that come in and out of there are your pipers and cessna SEPs - well one was coming in on finals waving about the place like a blue arsed fly - got caught ina crosswind and nised stright into a sandbank in the tay - everyone survived on board iirc which is pretty amazing, the plane was there for ages

I did the CPL at Tayside, Dundee and had a very good experience. The student : instructor ratio was 1:1, with exclusive use of the Arrow. If any maintenance issue arose there was an onsite facility to rectify the problem quickly.
Dundee is great to fly from - some spectacular mountain flying especially in winter, which you have to get use to for the Nav section of your skills test.
There is a resident examiner at Perth so you'll be familiar with the local area etc when you come to test.
V good instruction, reasonable price, great aeroplane. PM for more details.

Strongly endorse positive review of Tayside. Excellent instructor/aircraft availability, on-site engineering (when I did mine the guys came in early to ensure the 50 hour check was completed in time for the day's flying), and quality instruction - friendly but professional. Even came in on days off to move things ahead.

Whether you use Tayside or Tayflite you'll benefit just as much from any of the potential 3 examiners that they use, as you might from the course itself. I learned just as much on the day of the skill test as I did on the course.

Word of warning - if you get the resident Perth examiner, don't take jelly babies for the in-flight catering during the skill test. When I offered one to the examiner his silent scowl was a sight to behold. I'm told he prefers polo mints instead

PM if you want more info.

Visit both schools

I did my CPL at Tayflite in Perth Nov last year.
Good school with relatively new management.
Excellent instructor(s) and reliable a/c.

I knew a pair of guys that done CPL/IR at Tayside whilst I was in Perth and they enjoyed it there aswell....

The Syd Utting who was the FIC instructor at Tayside, and did an MCC last year with an airline job offer? Must've been a decent offer from Tayflite. Decent guy and FI too.

Sid is also teaching the FIC at Tayflite too. As Techboy says, Tayflite is under new management - actually part of the Air Charter Scotland Group who operate 5 Citations.

There have been quite a few changes eg the second Seneca has been brought back on-line, the PPL School at Perth is part of the ACS Group, Tayflite Engineering is now ACS Engineering etc etc.

If you'd like details pm me.

cheers

India Mike - your logbook is perfect - No idea who this "Hutton" chap might be.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Just to set the record straight, any feel for an airline job went up in smoke as fast as the oil price went up last summer! Still living in hope of an upturn eventually. Meanwhile, Alan at ACS made me a fair offer so I'm teaching there for the time being. I'm not the CFI, someone else has that onerous task - I just stay busy with FIC & CPL!

I suggest anyone planning their CPL in Scotland visit both us and Tayside. There's no doubt you'll get sound, professional instruction at both sites so it's very much down to personal opinion as to where you end up doing the course. We can both guarantee some of the best VFR flying in the UK. We have an Arrow II, theirs is a IV, both aircraft are great to operate.

Blue skies, etc

Tayside is good for the CPL, the instructor there is one of the nicest people you will meet and a very effective instructor. No knowledge of Tayflite.

Woops, sorry to hear that - hope the instructing world's still continuing strongly though, even with a change of location!

CPL at Tayside

Myself and a colleague both gained first time passes, in minimum time, for our CPL and IR in October and December 2008 respectively at Tayside, Dundee. Ian, the CPL instructor and John, the MEIR instructor are excellent instructors, very approachable and hard working. And it's Ian that likes the Jelly Babies, not the examiner!

Tayside's Arrow IV and Seneca II are in good condition and are both very nice to fly. Dundee's Seneca (G-JLCA) is apparently one of the few IIs that can actually climb reasonably well on one engine, 500fpm was regularly seen, even 800fpm on a cold day out of ABZ! Like a previous poster said, on site maintenance is a great advantage for most faults and the engineers and maintenance staff are very obliging. Oh I almost forgot, their sim is only a year old, therefore in excellent condition.

The FTO is small but friendly and very helpful. The low student to instructor ratio means that you can fly every weather-permitting day. If you need any more info on them, drop me a PM or go and speak to John or Ian, they'll be more than happy to chat.

Yeah - used to stay up there quite a bit when we flew up there in our microlights. Basic ok sort of accomodation - but one thing I remember, was that my door key fitted quite a few of the other doors. So not massively secure. might have changed by now - last time I was there was about 4 year ago
