This thread has just cheered me up. I'm very similar to you agewise, have the PPL and am just starting ATPL distance learning.

I intend to go CPL, IR and instructors course, because I had more or less written off any chances of commercial airline work. Plus the idea of a flying instructor is appealing to me anyway. So I'll get that far asap and see what happens.

Good luck, I'd be very interested to know how you're getting on.

I am 40, I plan to start ab-initio training in September... and was wondering which could be the best option, having in mind a JAA fATPL as a goal : Canada or South Africa ?

Which one of these standards is the closest to JAA ?

I reckon south africa's SACAA licenses would better smoothen your adaptation to the jaa system as SACAA has just adopted only jar-standard examinations.
So atleast on the theory side you shall maintain a continuity and avoid a turbulent transition to the JAA standards.

With regard to the distance learning studies, it is fine to do it this way. One tip is to get hold of the Bristol Ground School Online Question Bank.

This will prep you up for the exams. Hammer it out and hammer it out!! You will pass the exams thats what counts! HOWEVER, once you have passed them all and the time pressure etc is off, you can then go thorugh them all again, and LEARN it all at slow pace! In your own time, just what I'm doing now.

I passed them all last year but have always got my head in a book. I probably know more now than I did then!! It would be foolish not to have the professional knowledge required (hence the after exam study!), its vital. But for passing the exams.... (at the end of the day they just a hurdle) Knowledge is for life!
