New zealand Training and uk Conversions
Hi
I would like to gain my commercial pilots licence with multi engine instrument rating in New Zealand from Nil hours. I am attracted to this because of the location and what i thought was a much cheaper option than doing training in the UK. I've been looking into the process of converting a NZ CPL to a JAA- CPL and have realised that it costs quite alot to do this and adds hassle because some exams have to be done again along with flight tests etc. I hear alot about people from the UK doing their training abroad so my question is:
If I my aim is to eventually get an airline job, do i need to convert to a JAA-CPL, what have other people done after training abroad?

I was in Switzerland and wanted to learn how to fly and came to NZ to do that. It is way cheaper, infact a whole CPL costs the same as the conversion does to get it back to JAR. I guess you got to look at if its worth the travel, accommodation, and then conversion costs. NZ is a beautiful country with some great flying, and huge variety of terrain, and way less traffic.
I am still in NZ 3 years later with a 1200 hrs. I am looking at coming over to the UK, but the conversion is sooo expensive and is hard to afford, well actually impossible while earning NZ dollars.

It sounds like the NZ convertion is cheaper but once U work out the cost of your training in NZ , there is only a small difference from the JAA and the NZ.
If your intention is to fly and work in EU then the cheapest is to get a cheap FAA.the reason I mention cheap FAA is not because I hate the system . American training is good but everybody knows that the weather saves lots of time and money in US . The living cost, flying cost is cheaper and you save lot of time and money once U go to UK to convert the license. No matter whther u done your training in NZ, Aussi or any CAA country the bottom line is you need to have another £10,000-14.000 to do your convertion to get hold of the JAA Frozen ATPL with the MCC endorsment. MCC is a Mandotary requirment to join an Airline in any EU Airline.
Anybody should be lucky to finish the training in NZ since it takes 2- 3 years to do the 0 Hrs to CPL/MEIR with the delays in the system ( Examiner bookings ) weather etc etc. NZ is a beautiful COuntry no doubt about that with Great Instructors and a very good technical background. Some of the Airfields are awasom and a great experience to land on those since you will not come across them in UK.
So if U want to save money time and to convert the license to JAA and want to live and work in EU , then NZ-JAA route is not the best ,,, try FAA. PM me if u need more since I have done flying in both parts of this world.

My advice, admittedly asas one working for a UK FTO although not in the flying bit, is if you want to fly JAA then train JAA.
The purpose of the short conversion course to a JAA IR was not so people recently trained elsewhere could immediately qualify for a JAA IR. It was so experienced IR holders did not have to do the whole 50/55-hour course. Therefore most people find they take significantly longer than the minimum 15 hours to do the conversion from FAA (NZ less common so I don't know), so the training might end up being no cheaper, and having taken much longer to complete, so delaying your entry into this strong job market. We have had people do the whole 50-hour course even with an FAA IR; I heard that another school stopped sending people on combined courses as most were paying more in the end - if it worked then many UK schools would arrange it.

I THINK, ITS TIME....IAM PLANNING TO DO THE HELI....OVER THERE,...THEN DO THE ATPL.IN UK....AFTER DO THE JAA IN USA AT HELI.INC......I THINK ITS A SAFE MODULAR ROUTE....WORKING AND SAVING MONEY IN BETWEEN..ITS SUITES PEOPLE WITH HOME COMMITMENT I GUESS....FIND JAA APPROVED USA SCHOOLS AND GET FAA AND JAA AT THE SAME TIME.....GOOD LUCK

Thanks very much for the input. Definately food for thought. Its so difficult to get a simple answer about these topics from official people. Just goes to show the value of these PPRuNe forums
