How about a fly-in?

Okay,

I got to Redhill today, taxied out, taxied back, taxied out again then took off. 3/4 tanks and 4 up in a 160 hp Fuji using the shortest of Redhills moist Runways. My Bottom chewed a hole in the seat but we cleared the trees at the end by 30 - 40 inches http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/eek.gif

I tried to go East and was blocked by low cloud, tried north, then west, same thing. Noticed a bloody great Airport to the south so I didn't bother trying there, so back to the Airfield and wash the plane.

So, what have we learned, everyone who was going to the Fly-in is an "Old Pilot" so far so good, but let's not let this put us off.

My Suggestion. Da Da

Lets go somewhere with hard runways and something to do when we get there, I'm talking about Duxford. I am happy to try to organise something if everyone wants, what is the consensus.

PA38 30th September 2000 22:41

I can't belive you posted that message!!!
Showing all the others on this board how incompetent you are.
Don't you bother to check the taf's and metars, or even the BBC.
As for efects on performance of a "moist GRASS runway".
Please someone tell me this is a wind up

New Bloke 30th September 2000 23:00

Shall I bother

rightstuffer 30th September 2000 23:33

Don't pay any attention to that sanctimonious to**er NewBloke.

I took off this afternoon from a 600m grass strip, two up and hit heavy cloud at 600 ft. It was damp grass too.
Down again in 10 minutes....spent the rest of the afternoon clearing the grass cuttings out of the wheel pants. Whew!

Like the idea of Duxford. Lets doooooooo it.

When?

rightstuffer 30th September 2000 23:38

BTW PA38, there's no apostrophe in TAFs and effects has two 'effs'. Don't you check the OED or Roget's?

LowNSlow 30th September 2000 23:44

Are you sure it was the wheel pants you were clearing out? :) :) :)

PA38 30th September 2000 23:58

i alwais ave truble wyth mi spelyng, and did not expect a visit from the spelling police, but I do not have trouble with decisions especially when it is my neck on the line....

rightstuffer 1st October 2000 00:00

Now now children :) :) :)

I've been meaning to go to Duxford for ages and ages and ages - let's do it!

Also, the Flyer List is organising a Fly-in to Swansea next Sunday; at least two of us from here are planning to go, so if anyone else wants to join us say now and we can give you the details, such as they are.

New Bloke 1st October 2000 00:29

PA38
Why was your neck on the line? were you one of my passengers today? If you were you would have known that I got tafs, metars and actuals, noted that there was no cloud at all over Redhill and tried to get out. You would also of known that I exaggerated about how close I was to the trees (my attempt at humour) and how I remained VMC though-out the entire flight (all twenty minutes of it)

You wouldn’t have known that I know the take off distance, how to factor for wet grass, and made a judgement that it was close but doable, nor would you have known that I picked a “40kts point” and would have aborted if I hadn’t reached that speed by that point.

Why the nastiness PA38, why do you assume from my message I am incompetent?

PA38 1st October 2000 01:41

New bloke, why all the back pedalling, ho of course it was all a big joke....
No it was not my neck on the line or my exaggerations or my assumptions, but we are not the only ones (pilots) to read pprune.
The media and local campaigners also read the posts that appear here, and sometimes you see a direct quote in the press.
You just need to go on the AAIB web site to read about people who did the same, except they were not "exaggerating"....
Why give the "shut them down" brigade further ammo?
Just read your post again from a point of veiew of a person who hates GA and is trying to get his local field closed!

PA38, I just read New Bloke's post again too. Reads VERY VERY OBVIOUSLY as humour to me. OK, anything can be misunderstood, but I think that post is less likely to be than HUNDREDS of others on PPRuNe.

New Bloke 1st October 2000 03:07

And what the hell anyway, does my post deserve the reaction of your post?
If we are so worried about non-pilots reading this forum, shouldn’t we try to be more civil to each other and not call each other incompetent when no evidence exists.

I don’t want to get involved in a p1ssing contest so this will be my last say on your unpleasant post, but don’t you think calling someone incompetent is a tad excessive? Are you aware of Redhill’s Airspace? Have a look on a ½ mil. You will see that you have 1500’ QNH to play with, the TAF may say few at 500’ but if those few are near Redhill, they can block any legal VFR exit.

Finally, and I mean finally because I am really pissed off about this unprovoked attack of yours, I have not backtracked one word, if you thought that I really missed some trees by 3 to 4 feet and sat down and announced it to the world, you must be off your trolley.

Now by a good boy and try to allow the good flying club atmosphere that pervades down on this forum to continue. The unpleasantness can stay in the fora above this one.

fallen eagle 1st October 2000 10:46

I think I agree with Whirlybird if you want to go on like this go to the Wannabees forum I have been there but, I shall not be going back,a lot of the posts on that Forum seem to come from some very strange people and not very mature at that. bye bye.

Beagler 1st October 2000 12:46

So are we going to Duxford then? :)

stiknruda 1st October 2000 14:19

More Duxford and less back stabbing.

When

not next w/e, pse - off somewhere else

New Bloke 1st October 2000 15:05

Is this the right room for an Aurgument?
I've told you once.
No you haven't :)

I have just phoned Duxford, they are having an Airshow on the 15th Oct and we would be welcome then, we just need to book a slot in advance. Other than that, if we go on a non-Airshow day, we need to let them know about a week before we go.
I have never flown there before but from looking at Pooleys, there is no deadside, there are various other anomolies and pilots need to get a telephone briefing in advance.

Lets all decide when we want to go, personally I would prefer a Non-Airshow day as this would give us a chance to look around the excellent museum.

Flintstone 1st October 2000 15:47

Duxford is just up the road from me (don't take that literally PA38, actually it's about 12 miles. Just teasing ;)) and I also drop in there from time time.

Would be happy to help out with any organising and will see if I can blag any freebies (don't hold me to that).

When?

PS. Some of you may recall a post I made a few weeks ago saying I liked this forum. The reason I do is because of the friendly atmosphere and lack of bitching and nastiness that occurs in some of the others. Please don't spoil it for me http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/frown.gif.

LowNSlow 1st October 2000 18:56

Duxford sounds good cos I can drive there if the cub isn't ready. When are we going to do it?

FNG 1st October 2000 19:28

Duxford is indeed a most splendiferous place. I did quite a bit of my circuit bashing there and it was the start and finish point for my QXC (after which my instructor flew us back to base with 8 consecutive aileron rolls and 2 barrel rolls en route).

Dux v easy to find cos of huge hangars and proximity to BKY, M11 and other features. No dead side, cos of nearby Fowlmere (another place worth a visit), and circuits (which may quite often be shared with Tiger Moth, Dragon Rapide, Blenheim, Mark XIV Spit or whatever) always to south of the field, whichever rwy in use. They usually like you to join downwind, but straight in approaches may be possible. Helpful, pleasant and competent AFISOs in the tower. You can fly a nice tight circuit. Noise abatement to the south and east is common sense: avoid settlements and chemical works. Bird sanctuaries to north.

NB the hard rwy and the parallel grass strip are together one rwy, so if landing on the hard, usual procedure (subject to what the AFISO says about ground movements, of course) is to vacate hard and cross grass at 90 degrees , so you don't call vacated till off the grass strip.

New Bloke 1st October 2000 22:55

Righty Ho Duxford it is.

You are right Flintstone, this is nice and friendly down here and I appologise for loosing my rag. Please let that be the end of that!!!!!
Next week is out for some of us, the week after is 14th and 15th. My personal choice would be the 14th as I don't fancy the full blown airshow (seen enough Spitfires this season) but wouldn't mind seeing some of the practice and the IWM Hangars.

David, it's over to you...(daytime TV getting too much)

rightstuffer 2nd October 2000 02:04

Oh no, not the 14/15th PLEASE http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/eek.gif http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/eek.gif
That's about the only weekend I cannot make because I am working all through it in deepest Hampshire and I really would like to go.

Anyway, its going to rain that weekend! And snow. And there'll be fog. That nice John Kettley even mentioned that a plague of locusts was forecast near Duxford for that very weekend......honest. http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/eek.gif

Wot about any weekend after that......(pretty please....)

PS Or was it a plague of frogs..... http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/confused.gif

New Bloke 2nd October 2000 11:56

How about the weekend after 21st/22nd.

John Ketley tells me the locust swarm will have moved further East by then.

Whirlybird* 2nd October 2000 12:40

Weekend of Oct 21st/22nd is OK for me, New Bloke.

Though maybe you should all just forget about me, as the chances of the weather being good enough to fly from Shobdon to Duxford in late October are...well, not worth placing bets on anyway. Or maybe it isn't as far as I think ; I haven't looked at a map for a while. That, PA38, is a joke by the way. Talking of which, it should have been PA38 who apologised, not you, New Bloke, you didn't do anything...oh, well, enough of all that anyway.

New Bloke 2nd October 2000 13:14

Whirlybird.

Shobdon to Sherburn as the R22 flies (*well crow) 110.6nm 90kts nil wind 1h 14mins

Shobdon to Duxford 111.3nm 1h 14 mins

Not a lot in it :) :)

The beauty of Navbox light.

Flintstone 2nd October 2000 13:46

Any weekend fine by me as there's always a good chance of me having to work.

stiknruda 2nd October 2000 13:49

Duxford - w/e 20/21 sounds good, I've been in a coupe of times this year already so should be able to find it!

It's just 25 mins for me, too as opposed to 1h12 for Sherburn!!

sNr

GulfStreamV 2nd October 2000 13:51

Shall try again also...

GV

Whirlybird* 2nd October 2000 15:33

New Bloke,

You're right; I just checked. And I don't have to route around the Pennines, which I was expecting to do to get to Sherburn. So as the R22 flies it's actually about 8 miles closer, and should be about an hour and a half's flight (R22s will do 90 kts, but are happier with 80 - well, I am anyway). OK, count me in!

rightstuffer 2nd October 2000 18:55

Bless you my son! 21/22 it is then. Look forward to hearing the details. :)

New Bloke 2nd October 2000 19:03

So it came to pass that the next (first?) well anyway, a fly in will be Saturday 21st Oct 2000.

No bottle of wine this time, oh okay, a lovely bottle of WHITE Bergerac to the best suggestion of who I can give a bottle of this bl00dy stuff too.
Still trying to get rid of it....

New Bloke 2nd October 2000 19:48

Okey Dokey,

I have just spoken to Duxford, they would like some idea of numbers so they can work out how much to discount our landing fees by. The more the merrier so if you intend to come, please could all let me know.
We will need to PPR, so anyone going please E-Mail me with their details, I will E-mail back with the number to call. (they didn't want it put on the web site)
The cost of the IWM is £7.40 for adults.
I have booked for Sat 21st with a fall-back day of Sun 22nd (who says I don't learn my lessons)
There are restaurants on site
Look forward to seeing you all there. As a matter of courtesy, if anyone who knows Danny or the admin/moderator guys, would they please drop them a line asking them if they want to come.

Pete O'heat 2nd October 2000 21:19

Hmmm, not sure if I'm up for the 2.5nm flight to Duxford from Fowlmere. Especially as I have to drive past Duxford to get to Fowlmere :-) .

Still, I might just drive, and meet you all there.

OTOH, If theres a prize for the shortest flight?

[This message has been edited by Pete O'heat (edited 02 October 2000).]

arrow2 2nd October 2000 21:59

Yep I will try to be there if I can get an aircraft or a lift - I am working on it and will let you know New Bloke!

arrow 2

New Bloke 3rd October 2000 00:10

Perfect.

A bottle of delicious white bergerac for the shortest flight. :)

Beagler 3rd October 2000 01:15

Not including a bounce on landing :)

AC-DC 3rd October 2000 10:00

See you there. If someone need a lift seats are available. Based Elstree (faster to drive).

CityFlyer 3rd October 2000 17:54

I work at Duxford (Fighter Collection Volunteer) looking after the Grumman Bearcat (in hangar 3 at the moment). I should be there on Sunday 21 Oct. If you can find me, I might (repeat - might) be able to get some of you into the cockpit of the old girl. Just ask in hangar two for the matronly wench with the long brown hair who loves the F2F. They'll know who you mean.

New Bloke 3rd October 2000 19:05

City flyer

That would make an old man very happy ;)

rightstuffer 3rd October 2000 20:36

Get back! Get back! Anyway, I read her post first....me me me me me.........
