Best Grass Airstrips with pubs nearby!

Nothing finer than landing in a small grass strip and wandering down to a nearby pub for lunch!

My offering is

Clutton Hill Airstrip

with Hunters Rest Inn only a five minute walk from the strip.

Where do you suggest?

Genghis the Engineer 29th Apr 2010 12:37

Chilbolton, Abbots Mitre? About 20 minutes walk.

Grass Strips with pub

Keyston is excellent. Details in lockyears

Pitts2112 29th Apr 2010 14:06

Keyston tops my list due the pub but for outright hospitality and neighborliness you can't beat the owners of Burnham Thorpe and the pub The Nelson. Definitely worth a stop.

Halfbaked_Boy 29th Apr 2010 16:08

Another vote for Keyston.

Humaround 29th Apr 2010 18:20

Croft Farm, Defford. Wonderful place and the pub's not bad either.

BEXIL160 29th Apr 2010 18:26

Maypole, Kent...

Turn left out the gate, 100yds. Pub.

I remember going to this pub one lunch time many years ago and seeing a Piper Cub parked in the field right by the entrance.

The Pub With No Name

Mike Cross 29th Apr 2010 21:32

Keyston & Croft Farm. The Pub With No Name is adjacent to Colemore Common and is allegedly the highest pub in Hampshire. It's a very fine pub.

Sir George Cayley 29th Apr 2010 21:49

At Sywell one doesn't have to leave the field :ok:

Just 2 avoids - the new concrete runway and the person I cannot name.

Also, Rochester and the hotel isn't that bad. Though when I last stayed there someone banged on my door just before midnight and asked...

have you got a girl in there?

"No I haven't" said I idignantly.

OK I'll be right back with one:eek: Mwa mwa mwaaa

Shobdon - choice of three runways 1 sealed, 2 grass (all parallel) if you are a microlight, otherwise 1 grass which is longer than the sealed. Own cafe and bar on airfield, friendly staff and locals, plenty of parking and reasonable landing fees. Also pub not too far away (about 3/4 mile) in Shobdon Village itself. Shobdon Food Festival at the end of June for those who may be interested in local fare and it will also be the Open Weekend at the airfield with various events. :ok:
26th & 27th June. Shobdon Airfield Aviation Weekend
The highlight of the year, and one for ALL Club members, their family and friends. Planned to coincide as a joint venture with the Shobdon Festival at Shobdon Church and Arches.
All airfield operators will be offering trial flights, and in addition there are aerobatic displays,
and military aircraft flying in or by. Static displays of classic aircraft and classic cars, military
vehicles, and many other stands. LAA Strut Fly-In. BBQ and food all day.
(From a recent HAC News Letter)

Shobden/Sywell - I was looking for Airstrips rather than airfields, but thanks anyway

ChampChump 30th Apr 2010 11:12

As mentioned above, the Prince of Wales is but a step or two away from Maypole and does very good food.

A polite reminder that Maypole requires PPR due to restricted movements - not usually a problem.

Oaksey Park. About a 10-15 minute walk to the Wheatsheaf, along a lovely country lane.

DX Wombat 30th Apr 2010 20:02

Woonton - grass strip not too far from Shobdon (a few miles SW and on the chart) and I believe it has a pub in the village.

Tupperware Pilot 1st May 2010 16:20

After reading this thread...we went to Croft Farm, Defford. Had a very nice meal in the Oak. Well worth it! Very friendly airfield and pub. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4030/...d53a9034cf.jpg

Humaround 2nd May 2010 08:22

Good choice! :ok:

one2go 2nd May 2010 09:56

excellent suggestions, keep them coming!

How about

Wing Farm near Warminster

with

The George Inn about 15 minute walk (open from 11am)

overandout 4th May 2010 08:51

Is the pub still open at the Eastern end of the runway at Thurrock?

vintagemember 4th May 2010 10:01

The pub at Arlingham (SW of Gloucester) does excellent food. You can land on the beach (good hard sand) and it's a five minute walk.

Check your tide table first.

Fried_Chicken 17th May 2010 22:27

Baxterley (Charity Farm) with the Rose Inn in the village which is a short walk from the strip

There are a couple of nice pub's in Whittington which isn't too far from the strips at Sittles Farm, Alrewas (near Lichfield) or the Microlight strip at Roddige (just down the road from Sittles)

Fuji Abound 19th May 2010 11:00

Maypole - a couple of good pubs within walking distance.

Deanland - a pleasant enough pub in the village.

Tupperware Pilot 20th May 2010 17:05

More great ideas for the weekends flying...shame not got a aircraft or mate to go with this weekend. But we have planned a few flights...
I'm putting together a spreadsheet with web links to both the farmstrips and the closest pubs....
SO lets keep this thread going with more strips/pubs and maybe a star ratting?????

austerwobbler 20th May 2010 17:56

Skegness , pub on campsite 5 mins walk from check in and if your brave 20 mins to the sea for a paddle ! :ok:

manix 24th May 2010 09:11

Cromer

Agree about Keyston, fantastic place. About 3 months ago signs appeared next to the runway requesting all pilots to PPR. The contact details are in Lockyears.

To add to the list:

Cromer - the airfield is a 15 minute footpath walk across fields to the Foundry Arms at Northrepps which does absolutely superb food.

The airfield moved about a year ago, my last years Lockyear has the old site but my 2009 Pooleys has the new site.

Easy way to tell if you're looking at a new plate is that the new site has 2 runways, the old one only had one runway.

You'll get a very friendly reception here.

KingCooky 25th May 2010 12:10

Netherthorpe - EGNF

awesome airfield, very friendly and welcoming.

Clubhouse itself serves some lovely food, but within a mile or two are the Hewitt arms and the parish oven.

with only 450m ish of grass, EGNF is well worth a visit if you're up for the challenge!!

Tupperware Pilot 28th May 2010 18:00

Nuthampstead with The Woodman..
We went there today....great field and a nice walk to the pub. Food and welcome very good. :ok::ok::ok::ok: 4 stars for both.

Another vote for MAypole in Kent. The pub is very nice and just 100yds away.

SiClick 8th Jun 2010 10:51

Annother vote for the Croft Farm, Defford. Stayed overnight at the Oak inn, great food, and beer!

microlightgary 9th Jun 2010 16:54
