just bumping it up before it falls off the end, thread "Not Sticky!".

thing 10th Oct 2012 20:57

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it (can't be arsed flogging back through the thread) but Fadmoor just north of Kirkbymoorside in N'Yorks has a pub about 20 minutes walk away The Royal Oak Inn. Have flown into Fad which is a farm where you park amongst the roaming turkeys and other miscellaneous farm stuff. Was that impressed with the pub I've booked three nights there later this month.

Fadmoor is interesting as it is situated on the crest of quite a steep hill so all runways go up, or down depending on your inclination...but it's perfectly doable. Just don't expect to be level on any part of the runway or taxiways...:}

Edit: It's actually about a mile, so 20 minutes if you meander and 12 minutes if you march like me.

Also to add another airfield Crosland Moor (Huddersfield International, another interesting approach....) has a pub at the other end of the runway and Boston has an actual restaurant at the end of its runway.

Thanks...I have asked for it to become sticky, but no reply. Maybe if more people ask?

Well it's been a while and I think we all know why......bloody weather.
But we did finnaly get to fly in to a grass strip this weekend. We went to Croft Farm...yes we have been there once or twice before! Thankfuly it has dried out a bit in the last week. But you still need to call first.....
So lets kick this thread off again and hope for more weather like the weekend.
Please keep adding strips and pubs the more the better...
cheers
Damien

Off to Croft Farm tomorrow! Not been before, I notice it has a pub outside the airfield. What's the runway like, I'm taking a 172.

Tupperware Pilot 9th Apr 2013 19:37

Enjoy croft...yes he pub is just outside...please get PPR first, the strip still has some soft areas. There is a 172 based there but please check its ok first.

Will do, ta.

thing 9th Apr 2013 20:25

Went to Rosemarket last year, very interesting, never landed on a par 5 before!

Incidentally although not a grass strip I can thoroughly recommend Kirkbride and the White Heather hotel which is five minutes walk. Food is very good.

thing 10th Apr 2013 07:29

Vis for here today 5000 increasing to 8 .... Probably do the milk run up to Sandtoft. I'm going somewhere today.

Cheddington...

.....what a great little strip.
For many reason's, the Hinton Boy's have not been anywhere new this year. Until yesterday, we took advantage of the great weather and 5 of use went to Cheddington. Great place, great welcome. Even got a life to the pub...thanks. Do like there club house!
PPR needed as you will need a quick brief on the approaches.

I think our paths may have crossed yesterday around midday TP. I was heading north towards Silverstone when I noticed a yellow Cub flying alongside a biplane which passed behind me.

Tupperware Pilot 12th Nov 2013 12:38

Hi Neil,
If you were in a sports Cruiser type thing then yes.....? Thanks for waving your wings back.
:ok:

Neil Desperandum 12th Nov 2013 15:46

Yep - that was us.

cambioso 13th Nov 2013 06:10

I was in the biplane (Jungmeister), lovely day wasn't it?

Anyone know whether Keyston is still operational these days and also the Pheasant pub just a few minutes walk down the road?

Tagron 1st Dec 2013 20:22

Keyston was still operational in August, and so was The Pheasant. The rumour from locals in the pub was that consideration was being given to abolishing the strip, which they did not want to see happen. One can only hope this was nothing more than a rumour.

Orange Grove/Chavenage Airstrip Nr Tetbury

It is in my old Lockyears Farmstrip guide.Strip Grass08/26 (550x20mtr). The strip is a real gem for light aircraft,so peaceful and secluded. One would have to get a taxi in to Tetbury or to "The Gumstool Inn part of Calcot Manor Hotel, very nice for a week end break treat ." The strip is on the Chavenage House Estate, Google Chavenage House. Sorry if this is all old hat.

I had a very good meal there in December (went by Taxi) and saw a Cub-like thing joining the circuit for the strip on Dec 28th as I drove past

thing 27th Feb 2014 20:15

I'll second Tupperware's rec of Gt Massingham. Went there yesterday and what a beautiful little village. Counted three duck ponds and at least two village greens. The church which was surprisingly open is well worth a visit too. The local pub (Dabbling Duck) is excellent. Food was delicious. Highly rec.

I shall return.

flybymike 27th Feb 2014 22:48

How far from the airfield to the pub? Is it walkable?

thing 28th Feb 2014 06:32

Yes, you can either walk across the field through the back of the churchyard or round the old taxiway and into the village. I walked the long way round and it takes about ten minutes steady stroll. As the crow flies I would say it's around 300 mtrs.

flybymike 28th Feb 2014 10:00

Thanks I'll give that a try.

Garston Farm

I suspect that this strip has been mentioned before, however I flew into Garston today.
What a wonderful gem it is. The strip is very well kept. We parked up by the caravan and was met by the owners. They suggested the best route into town.

For information the directions were to walk through the gap in the trees behind the caravan, across the yard towards the three concrete blocks, along the track until a gate appears on the right, through the gate and then immediately left along the lay-by and into town. An easy route which also avoids walking along the busy A420.

Although we arrived before The Lord Nelson opened, we enjoyed a lovely drink in the village tearooms, which are perhaps only a further 100m along the high street.

thing 23rd Jul 2014 22:37

Finally got to Croft Farm today! (see post @ 125). By God it was hot today though. Excellent pub and very pleasant farm shop that sells local beer and cider. Another one I shall return to. Have been back to Great Massingham and the Dabbling Duck still impresses. Another very frendly place, no pub but cookery on site at weekends is Beverley (Linley Hill). Called in there last month and cooked breakfast is £3.50!

Fantome 23rd Jul 2014 23:20

Out here in the antipodes one can but dream of the idyllic flying life
you lot have within your compass. Calls to mind Hal Penrose and his musing and meanderings aloft over Dorset and Devon, spying out old Roman Roads and Barrows and such. Refer - 'Airymouse' and 'Cloud Cuckooland'.

Not that he was ever on any kind of pub crawl. Too intent on looking for food for the soul. He had all those Putnam histories to write too.

There are a few notable places in Australia where airfield and town are close enough for the short stroll. Ones that I know of, of old,
but still drop into these days, are Cootamundra, Camden, Merimbula and Apollo Bay.

But top of the pops has to be Lady Barron on Flinders Island. The Furneaux Tavern is worthy of a plug. And the beer is fine anytime of year. I must declare .. . .my heart is there . . tho' I've been from Darwhine to Old Dapto.

Forfoxake 27th Jul 2014 23:09

My favourite is the Kingarth Inn, about 10 mins walk from Bute airstrip.

Do not forget to leave a small contribution there towards the grass-cutting or post a cheque to the Scottish Flying Club c/o Sandy Cameron, 1c Belmont Rd, Ayr, KA7 2PH

Roserrow

Hi
I'm just going to give this thread a bit of a boost from the archive, and place a vote for Roserrow. It's just across the water from St Mawgan. A nice and interesting field for strip pilots to visit.
The food in the golf club/health club is far, far better than "good pub".
It's also about a mile's scenic walk to the beach: a very popular place too!

Request for a PPR slot from the health club.
-My advice would be to act politely. They aren't flyers, and just log expected arrivals in a book. They aren't being restrictive if they say they can't take you at 11:00. It just means that they've written someone else down for that half hour slot. They've just run out of lines in the book. The rest of it is just so chilled, it really is all down to you.
-The other thing is to politely avoid approaches over the barns at the end of the field. That can be awkward, but do a curved approach like at Popham. The You tube video shows a straight in approach (naughty).

Slay Barn

Does anyone have contact details for Slay Barn at Cuddesdon?

Oldpilot55 8th Oct 2014 22:43

Binham, Norfolk. Strip is 200 metres from the pub which is better than excellent.
East Winch. Pub is about 20 mins walk away, The Carpenters. Very good too.
Another vote for the DD at Gt Massingham.

thing 8th Oct 2014 22:46

Where's Binham? 200 metres sounds good to me.

Oldpilot55 8th Oct 2014 22:51

Binham also appears on some guides as Manor Farm. Lovely smooth strip. About 3 miles due south of Langham or 5ish miles NNE of Little Snoring.
There is an abbey in Binham which is worth a wander about.

thing 8th Oct 2014 23:19

Ta, I'll give it a recce.

Reed farm strip - update?

Does any one have any further info regarding the farm strip at Reed, Hertfordshire (2 miles west of Nuthampstead)? Stumbled accros it today whilst walking the dog.

Cheers

Better late than never...?

The site i mentioned, just completed it last week and it's open to be added to.

Will be adding a number of German grass strips i'm familiar with

aerodromes.net - The Online Airfield Database

thing 5th Sep 2015 13:37

Couple of others I've been to recently

Enstone, hard and long runway (grass also if you want it)-very nice pub about 25 minutes walk to the local village.

Sandown-grass, long enough for most normal aircraft-nice caff on site and about 30 minutes walk to the front.

Old Warden-grass, shortish, around 500 metres if I remember right. Been a few times but probably one of the best GA places to visit in the country. Nice eatery on site. Off there next Saturday weather permitting.

Nice!
:ok:

On Track 21st May 2016 03:37

And on the other side of the world I can recommend Milawa, Victoria, Australia (YILA).

Brown Bros winery is just across the road from the air strip. A pub and other accommodation are within walking distance.
