Some of the fleet waiting to fly.

While the runway is being resurfaced the fleet is grounded so i took some photo's of all that were there as some are away being serviced or flying at other local airfields.

I often wondered what had become of G BBJX. It has evidently had a respray and doubtless accumulated goodness knows how many more hours to add to the umpteen thousands it had already done when I last flew it more than twenty years ago!

007helicopter 30th Nov 2009 18:37

Looks like it is going to be really nice, wish we had this at Rochester!!:ok:

poss 30th Nov 2009 19:04

Looks like the resurface is going well, I think when it's done I'll have to come down and help break it in.

Unless the resurfacing has been radical enough to point the runway into the prevailing wind...

Well done!

Can't put my finger on why I like Sandtoft so much but I am very pleased to see this investment in the airfields future.

That is a true wind sock direction for that day pointing down the runway.
Photo has been Photoshopped to enhance details, sharpen & crop photo but nothing else has been touched.

x933 1st Dec 2009 09:26

It can't be photoshopped - the only time the windsock is pointing down the runway is when it's unusable...

Fond memories of doing my PPL there when I was a Leeds brat. Nice to see it being looked after :-).

matkat 1st Dec 2009 10:59

I visited the airfield on two occasions late last year to drop of and retrieve some avionic test equipment enjoyed the club house big breakfast on both occasions best for miles around.Wish I could get same where I am now.

MichaelJP59 1st Dec 2009 13:39

Surely Sandtoft 05/23 runway is pretty well aligned for the prevailing winds. Now Leeds Bradford at 14/32.. a good job it's a nice wide runway!

flybymike 1st Dec 2009 17:24

I suppose it depends what type of weather you normally fly in.

Prevailing south westerlies are normally associated with unstable low pressure systems, and North Westerlies with fine high pressure days.

That often makes Leeds the best choice for fair weather flyers!

Looks like a cracking job, didn't realise there was such a hump as image 2 shows, unless the camera angle exacerbates it. look forward to a visit hopefully over the Christmas hol's

A job well done. Good to see someone willing to invest for the future.
I'll be calling in as soon as we get some decent weather.

Mondo 5th Dec 2009 08:30

Trev, I would like to personally thank you for the time and effort you have put in to making a record of the runway resurfacing. The quality of these photos is excellent and they give a progressive account of the runway upgrade, from start to finish. The latter photos of the club house are so good I think they could be used as part of the next leaflet advertising campaign, but maybe one when the place is FULL might give a good impression. Kindest regards Ray.

7of9 5th Dec 2009 08:38

Cheers Ray & No problem, i am trying to up the clubs Profile to get more members & if this helps then great.
I am always out & about with my camera when not flying so if there is anything you want photo's of to help build the clubs profile then give me a shout.

Would like to get photo's of the runway from approach views sometime but not on one of my lessons!!

Will be down in a bit to photograph the finished job.

Cheers Trev:}:}

Ladies & Gentlemen.
This is the last instalment from the Sandtoft Runway Resurfacing.
I hope you all have found this interesting & will visit Sandtoft & leave your own wheel marks on the runway.

These were taken this morning, Saturday 05/12/09, as the Runway is still shut while the finishing touches are done & will be hopefully open tomorrow as I myself have a lesson booked at 10.00am.

Thank you all for the comments & i hope you liked all the updates.

Thanks Trev - but surely it can't be your final instalment, we need a few pics from the air to complete your series:)

7of9 5th Dec 2009 14:29

True, no one has offered to take us up yet as i am a student pilot there my own money is going on my lessons so waiting to see if anyone has a spare seat they don't mind letting me have for nowt............

When I phoned at midday it was not ready but it should be OK tomorrow...perhaps

7of9 5th Dec 2009 14:54

Sorry but just had my lesson cancelled for tomorrow as the runway has to be inspected by the CAA & earliest I have been told it might reopen is Thursday 10/12/09 now so no flying till then.

Sucks but hey never mind. Not the clubs fault.

Surprised at that, did the club not know about a CAA inspection as it they always expected to reopen at the weekend?

Even then, presumably it could still open unlicensed i.e. no flight training?

Shunter 5th Dec 2009 16:02

Surely it could be used as unlicensed until the CAA get off their backside and inspect? I was planning to head over for a fry-up in the morning. Oh well :(

Either way, looks like a nice job :ok:

Sir George Cayley 5th Dec 2009 16:35

I'm full of admiration for everyone involved:ok: What a fantastic advert for this country's can do - get on with it attitude. I feel that a tad humble that in this bleak period there are still people willing to take a chance put their money up and achieve the impossible.

You all deserve a medal, a hug and financial sucess:)

But, ( and you know there's always a but) Sandtoft is a licensed aerodrome, so that licence is in force 24/7 365. Ops hours are published and I think there's a NOTAM running at present due to the resurfacing project effectively closing the runway.

Frustrating as it is, I'd suggest putting pressure on the person in charge to let the runway be used in advance of the CAA confirming it meets regulatory requirements, would not be wise.

I'm sure they understand that, as the accountable person, there is a huge risk in allowing use of the runway now. Even if the flight is private and doesn't require a licensed runway, even if ones insurance covers flights from non-licensed strips, just imagine the consequences of an incident:eek:

A few days lost now will be nought compared to the potential loss should the Law of Sod apply before the Campaign arrives and Delmontes the work.

Patience is a virtue.

Sir George Cayley

Mickey Kaye 5th Dec 2009 18:30

Have all the aircraft parking areas been reserviced as well. Also do they have lights installed for night flying?

Very nice photos by the way thanks for keeping us informed.

7of9 6th Dec 2009 08:51

Just realised that for those of you who have never visited Sandtoft will not have seen what the Runway used to look like before the resurface so have dug out one of my summer photo's for you to see.

Great work and very informative, I am pleased to see G-BAEO still in action since I last flew her in 1979. Where have 30 years gone? Lovely aircraft as I recall. I may have to pop along and have another go in the spring of 2010.

Happy (smooth) landings to all at Sandtoft

Just spoke to Sandtoft,
CAA not coming in to inspect till Thursday or Friday now!!!
Great club losing money Instructors losing wages I'm waiting to fly & finish my PPL course Weather has been good while runway been out of action & finished.............:ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh:

The Heff 8th Dec 2009 17:29

I'm really hoping that it's going to be signed off soon; because I would like to complete the night-rating at Sandtoft rather than elsewhere.

What are the odds that the night qualification course will be skipped this year?

Shunter 8th Dec 2009 18:08

Why would they skip the night qualification course? It won't start getting light again for several months... a couple of days won't make any difference.
