TMG where to go

Wondering where to go to add TMG to my EASA PPL A SEP license? I think I need a skills test to do this. I live north of Stevenage. Wondering what is reasonably near and reasonably priced?

The number of solo hours I have done over the last 2 years is a bit short. I've been concentrating on gliding instead, so if I did a TMG skills test would that also cover me for my PPL A SEP? Or would I still have to do the hours or a skills test on a Cessna to keep that current?

Many thanks...

Are you in the UK? - it's tricky to find an EASA TMG FI and examiner. There aren't very many in the sceptered isle. You may find it easier to have a different licence for flying motor gliders.

I did mine at Romorantin. Yes, I know it is a long way for you, but it didn't take long. An hour in the morning to get some handling, then the test in the afternoon.

I added a TMG Rating to my PPL SEP in April, with Oxfordshire Sportflying at Enstone.

I'd certainly recommend them.

Post-Rating, TMG hours serve to keep the SEP valid also.

Thanks Dave. Think I'll try Enstone then. How many hours did it take you to convert??

Yeah, but it takes twice as long to do the navigation bit so you don't really save anything.

If you already hold a EASA PPL with SEP then you don't need to do a nav section - it's just a Class Rating test. So yes, the Venture will still save you a lot of pennies compared to the Diamona.

How long to convert? Depends on your experience of course. If you've got some tailwheel time it will help, and if you're pretty good at glide circuits and PFLs you're nearly there!! You could be ready for test in an hour or three...

To say any more might constitute advertising, so let's just leave it at PM me if you're interested...!

I added a TMG to my CPL last year. Trained with Oxford Sport at Enstone. Needed an EASA TMG examiner which they do not have so took the aircraft to Hinton where there is an examiner. Two organisations are at Hinton, one is a sound gentleman who I would recommend. Avoid the other.

Total cost including training, test fee, and CAA fee about £700. Hope this helps.

Just a footnote to Dusty_B's comment. In the past some examiners didn't include a nav component and some did; recently EASA has mandated that the test should always include a nav component. It is nothing too onerous; locally, the stude is expected to simply plog and fly to a given destination - usually the test area.

Typical conversion times are in the 2 to 5 hours region, depending on experience and recency - power pilots with glider experience would be nearer the lower figure.

Nav element

There was a nav element but we used this just to take the aircraft away for some general handling. At most the nav was 20 minutes and we worked our way back doing stalls etc.

Can a PPL examiner do your TMG test and sign you off or do they have to be a TMG examiner?
