Could he do it now?

BBC News - Mathias Rust: German teenager who flew to Red Square

Mathias Rust. 50 hours on his PPL, straight into Red Square.

Whatever your view, it was a fair bit of flying

I still have my 'Red Square' tie. Blue, with a red square, with an outline of a C172 on it. Not worn it for a long time as few today would understand what it's about. And anyway, now I'm retired I don't wear ties (except for Concorde tours).

Good on yer, Mattius!

What I did not realise when he did it, was the routing up via Iceland then across to Scandinavia. That would, given his relative inexperience, been a decent flight, but to then blast off with the intent of buzzing Moscow. Well that takes some guts. All without a GPS or I pad in sight.
