Running a fuel tank dry
The opposite extreme would be a piece of pipe, oriented vertically. Very easy to measure level in that but hard to accommodate in an airframe
What, like in the supercub? Built in 1953 (ours) although there is quite a lot of fuel left when the level sinks out of sight.
