Bacon Butties

Hi all, looking for recommendations for strips where you can get a bacon or sausage buttie or anything hot really on a Wednesday and where there are likely to be pilots ready and willing to talk nonsense about flying with me for an hour or so, you know, like we do here. Looking at 50 nm radius Lincoln, although willing to travel further for tall pilot's tales. That's tall tales that pilot's tell not tales told specifically by tall pilots. Prefer not shorter than 600m strip at my stage of the game. Not interested in weekends, I already know where they all are.

If your feeling adventurous, come down to Shobdon (EGBS), near Hereford.
The foods good, and well priced, and there are plenty of people around to talk nonsense with - myself included when I can!

I can recommend Sleap for first class food. Nice place to fly into also with a little wreck research museum. Although this wasn't open when I visited so not sure on weekday opening times.

Wherever you find, enjoy!

I would recommend Sandtoft if you are based in Lincolnshire. Has a good runway these days and the food is of a high quality and reasonably priced. Usually find a few fellow aviators in the restaurant.

Thanks chaps, I already have a trip to Sandtoft penned in for when Trev Marshall and I can be there at the same time. Shobden looks a little adventurous for me at the moment, I believe it is one half gliding and the other half powered? Also looking at the plate there seems to be plenty of areas to avoid. I've enough on at the moment finding places and landing on them without worrying about overflying Mr Blogg's pig farm.

I do like Breighton, interesting stuff there and there's always a couple of other visitors to chew the fat with but their hot grub set up is only open weekends.

Fenland?
Elvington which has a cafe in the museum
Sleap is very nice, as is Shobdon
Breighton is good and I believe there is a pub within walking distance
Sherbourne tank museum on the North Norfolk coast has a strip and a nice cafe.

Elvington is on the list to do, I've been there by road, great place and caff. Fenland, yes, apparently according to the plate their caff is open on Wednesdays, only about 20 mins from me. I set off there last month but had RTB because of weather, I must give it another go. Sherbourne tank museum, must look that one up, sounds interesting.

Breighton is good, but no hot stuff except weekends. Didn't know about the pub though. Sherburn has a good caff too but I've been there a few times.

It's really not as difficult as it looks.
The gliding is only en masse on weekends, so it isn't something to worry about. The avoidance areas are also rather easy - they are rather big, so aren't too much hassle!

cheers,
Jake.

The food at Netherthorpe is very good if you have a suitable aircraft.
Sleap, Fenland (not Mondays), Sandtoft, Breighton, Beverley, Shobden, Leicester, Nottingham are all worth a visit.

Its a shame that Shobdon never appears user friendly because its a great airfield to fly into surrounded by some very interesting countryside. One day maybe they will get their act together and learn how to market the place-cleaning up the toilets would be a great start.

It's several months since I was at Shobdon and I can only speak for the Ladies facilities, but, apart from a new coat of paint being a good idea, they were perfectly clean and usable. I can't speak for the state of the Gents but it is the users who make things nasty not HAC and their cleaners who have to deal with any mess.

Bacon Butties

Hinton in the Hedges has hot food on six days a week (closed Mondays).
Its the normal kind of road side cafe style but is good value. Two good runways as well. Visit the website for PPR- it is an easy airfield but NO overhead joins due to the parachuting- just a case of joining straight in.

Has fuel and maintainence as well and an active little flying club.

Great, keep them coming. Talking about parachuting I was on my way to Sywell on East Midlands radar recently and overheard 'G-xx overhead Langar' to which the response was 'Don't be there's a live drop going on at the moment....'. One of those moments that makes your toes curl.

Ah, Tonker we both posted at the same time there. The times I've been to Sywell the Pilot's Mess has never been open and I've finished up in the hotel. Having said that I'm very fond of Sywell and love the sign about hi vis jackets..

Beverley no hot grub during the week. Netherthorpe, doesn't that have the shortest licensed strip in the UK? It says on the plate to ring for briefing if you haven't been there before which makes me think I'm probably not experienced enough yet. Leicester usually has about 900 a/c in circuit at any one time which I find a bit off putting. Tollerton might be worth a punt.

I was there yesterday, and the Gents were fine. Nothing wrong..
