stansted tmz

Hi

if I want to fly from elstree to duxford do I have to call farnborogh north and advise them of this as I will be flying through the TMZ? Or do I just select listening squawk 0013 and tune into 129.55 (e.g. for Luton)?

The notam states that you must simply be squawking with mode C. No need to 'request penetration/transit' with Farnborough North, Luton or Essex. You, obviously, need to respect vertical and lateral boundaries of CAS.

However, I would recommend speaking with North on 132.8. Jolly helpful chaps and chapesses!

Are you really going into the TMZ? The TMZ sections are the 1500' Max Alt "stubs" at each end of the STN approaches. Elstree to Duxford, in my book, does not need to go near them...

As above, just Squawk Mode C (Mode A alone will not do). If your Mode C does not work / you don't have one, you need to talk as above, they are v helpful.

As a private pilot based at Panshanger, I can confirm that you don't need to squark squat to transit north between Luton and Stanstead, as long as you are below 2,500ft. The airspace you see on the 1:500,000 map is effectively a bridge connecting the two TMZ's ranging from 2,500ft-3,500ft. It's all class G below that. You obviously have the listening squark code for Luton and Stanstead (0013) which is useful if you are unfamiliar with the area.

Paul H, it would appear that you are confusing TMZs with CAS. The Stansted TMZs are Class G airspace. The definitive AIC is Y 076/2009

You may fly non-radio non-transponder EGTR-EGSU if you want provided that you remain within Class G airspace and outside the EGLG ATZ and comply with Rule 45 by making arrangements with both ATZ ATSUs.
You may fly non radio and squawk 7000.
You may fly non radio and squawk 7000 with Mode C.
You may fly non radio and squawk 7000 with Mode S.
You may enhance that by listening to Luton 129.550 or Stansted 120.625 whilst squawking 0013.
You may communicate with from Farnborough (North) LARS 132.8. to obtain ATSOCA.
If your route actually requires that you penetrate the EGSS TMZs without Mode C then approval can be obtained via Farnborough or EGSS outside Farnborough hours.
The list is almost endless.

Quite frankly the simplest way to navigate from EGTR-EGSU is via BPK-BKY outside the TMZs not above 2400 EGLL QNH. Then you can communicate as your spare capacity will permit.
Don't forget to check the AIS Freephone number beforehand for any CAS(T) or RA(T).

Yes it appears that I am. Currently in the Isle of Skye, 600miles from my map, I'm trying to work of my "ageing" memory.
Indeed, the "Bridge" is part of Lutons class D CTA, linking the two CTR's via Stanstead's CTA..
The easiest way to fly north between the two (to Duxford), is just fly below 2,500ft on a radial of 360 FROM BPK, until over the dual carriageway comming West out of Royston, then turn right roughly of HDG 050.... think this is right, I *might* of have a few beers.
