Hi all my CPL expires end of this month whats to do I do ofcourse still have my ppl,but understand that I will only be able to fly in the U.K.as it not a J.A.R. ppl.so it looks as if in one month I go from CPL to local flying unless I shell out buckets of money every 6 months to keep my CPL.How do I convert my U.K.CPL to a JAR PPL.??? I guess flight crew lic might tell me,but they are 9to4 and I work weekdays every time I get chance to call I get sorry none of our agents are available, poss they are at lunch or on a break. Bye for now

If you have a valid aircraft rating SEP or MEP and a valid medical then you can renew your CPL. You will require both of these ratings to be valid to renew a PPL.
If you go to the CAA website you can request an application form to renew your CPL, there really is no reason to trade it or change to a JAA licence.

Fallen Eagle, it seems that some of the good bits of JAR-FCL have passed you by. As Noggin says, there's no difference now between keeping a PPL current and keeping a CPL current. When you say your licence expires what exactly do you mean? Is it 10 years old? Have you not flown for ages?
If you can't get an answer from Gatwick just track down a Flight Examiner (either a CAA one at a Test Centre or an industry one at almost any commercial school) and pick their brains.

You got it my CPL is a ten year one just comming to the expiry date.I am in current flying practice, but have existed for the last few years on a class 2 medical, seemed little point coughing up for a class 1,when not flying in an environment that required it.The authority say I NEED A CLASS I JAR to renew it.I guess quite a few of us are all still a bit confused.Maybe when I get to talk to the correct person at FCL all will be sorted. FE,
You need a class 1 to renew but can then lapse to a class 2 again for a period (not sure how long but my AME knows. I'll ask him next week). He gives me a C1 and a C2 together; one for 6 months the other for 12. One fee.

Yaberdaberdoo. It's OK Boo-Boo.

FE,
£165 for a six month C1 or £60 for a 12 month C2; can't blame you.
My AME's answer is: C1 for issue or renewal. Then you can let it lapse to a C2 for five years so long as you return to the AME who holds your notes, otherwise its two years if you go to another AME. After five years, it's AMS at Gatwick for an initial again!! Wophoo. OK?

Thanks Yogi-B My AME still wont play ball he is convinced its not possible to do what you and I thlnk is correct and logical. The authority did relent a bit after requesting all log books for issue of JAR PPL I have convinced them that it would be a nonsense to send them, at vast cost, my 22 log books. Now they only want the 2 that are current. How to resolve the medical I dont know maybe let it ride then sue the AME for loss of my licence, USA style. The whole thing has realy peed me off like everyone I worked hard to get a professional licence now it seems they dont want me to have it any more.

If the AME won't give you two certificates, go to another AME, plenty of others will.
As you have a UKL CPL you also have a UK PPL, so why change it to a JAA PPL?
Yogi-Bear
There is no need to go back to the same AME again, you can go wherever you like. Once you have held a Class 1 there is no requirement to go to Gatwick ever again to get another Class 1.

Yogi,
How much does your AME charge for issuing a C1 and C2? That might work for me, since I have no idea when I'll actually get a CPL, but I don't want to go back to Gatwick; got a C1 renewal last time as I wasn't sure if I could let it lapse or not.
An instructor friend told me the rules have JUST been changed, so that you can extend a C1 and fly on it as a C2, as I believe you could before JAR. Not sure of this, but worth checking into. The trouble is, you get different answers from different AMEs, which is why I renewed my C1. I know how you feel, Fallen Eagle!
If anyone manages to find the up to date details of this on the web, could they please post them.
Many thanks.

My AME says he has spoken to Gatwick and he is correct,is there some scheme afoot at the Authority to root out all the old B!!!!!s like me.I am now about to Email the medical section to try and resolve this once and for all.I do not actually want a JAR PPL, just trying to guard against that day when some ponce says O.K.you guys, your licences are no longer valid.Have any of you read the article in Pilot re,JAR.YOUR FLYING FUTURE IS IN THE HANDS OF NINCOMPOOPS,dont know if the spelling is correct, but what a wonderful old fashion word,so descriptive. Cloud chaos land! If you are near EGCC, mine will do. Wish you luck with Med. branch. There is a list of all AMEs of their site.
I'm still waiting for FCL to answer an unrelated query from two weeks ago. Probably got them stumpted. But they did offer the info. gratuitously, that a C1 doesn't cascade to a C2. Sorry Whirly, you shouldn't believe all that instructors say!
