If you have a valid aircraft rating SEP or MEP and a valid medical then you can renew your CPL. You will require both of these ratings to be valid to renew a PPL.
If you go to the CAA website you can request an application form to renew your CPL, there really is no reason to trade it or change to a JAA licence.
