Question Suggestions for scenic flight?

We have a friend visiting us from Australia. While she is here, I'd like to take her for a scenic flight - say 2 hours or so. Looking for suggestions, either;

a) A scenic route offering interesting views from the air, and landing somewhere pleasant for tea and sticky buns; or

b) A destination town with airfield reasonably close to centre, likely to be of interest to a visiting Aussie.

I am based at Wycombe. I haven't yet had any ideas of my own as far the "scenic route" goes, but have been thinking about either Cambridge or Shoreham (Brighton) as inetresting day-trip destinations.

Answers on a postcard please....

Thanks,

Andy

How about round the M25past Biggin Hill, down the south-east to Leeds Castle, Kent. Then south to the coast past Beachy Head. You can go down low and see it from the side. Then along the Seven Sisters to Shoreham. Easy to get into Brighton from there, I think, even with public transport.
Fish'n'chips on the seafront then home for tea and medals.

Have fun!

Three suggestions:-

(1) Oxford: unlike Cambridge, the city is not within the ATZ, so you can dawdle overhead the Radcliffe Camera whilst talking to Oxford Approach.

(2) the White Horse (haven't checked the map to see if it is clear of air space and danger areas but, if it is, presumably it looks good from above)

(3) Welshpool: the airfield is nothing special but the surrounding blue remembered hills are splendid.

You could probably do all of those on one trip.

Fly out west along the downs to the Severn Bridges.

Turn right to run up the Wye valley between Chepstow and Monmouth (preferably lowish level).

Call into Shobdon for a cup of tea and something to eat.

Return to Wycombe via the towns of Cheltenham and Oxford (again low level near the towns)

North side of the Heathrow zone and down the Lea Valley to the QE2 bridge or through LCY zone and over the dome (keeping an eye on your "alight clear" options). In decent vis you can even see the Houses of Parliament. Down to Beachy Head which you view from just high enough to make land if the engine packs up. Also bear in mind that if you are going to give your passenger the best view you won't be following the RH rule along the coast. Past Brighton to Shoreham for tea, then back up the other side of Gatwick's CTA.

On the leg from Beachy Head turn inland and follow the river before Seaford. Turn 180 when past the downs and you will see the "Long Man" at Wilmington a figure carved in the chalk hills. There is also a horse - both depicted on the half mil maps but the horse could do with a bit of a clean-up!

The Isle of Wight, taking in the Needles, Soutampton and Portsmouth:

via Kingsclere, Chilbolton and Lymington, round the Needles, follow the south coast of the Isle of Wight around to Bembridge (now re-opened, with concrete strip). Have lunch at the pub next to the airfield (good value/fresh food), and walk down to the beach and along the cliff-top if you've time.

Return via Portsmouth, Haslemere (across the Devil's punchbowl) and Farnborough.

A great trip that takes in cities, sea, countryside and the beach!

Sorry WWW, but at least I didn't make the usual sheep-related comments. Nice runway, but a bit limited on the catering and ambience front I thought. Great location though.

Thumbs up

Thanks everyone - what a marvellous bunch we have here! Very useful indeed!

South coast sounds like a great idea... nice and scenic, and as a low time PPL also good because I am familiar with the area from the cross-countries we do from Wycombe during the course which have taken me down to Shoreham, Goodwood and Bournemouth along the coast.

I'm planning the trip for late July, so will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again everyone, I love this BB!

Andy

This will take you slightly longer but the trip over the welsh hills is stunning. Stop at Caernarfon next to the beach they do a good cuppa and fry up and then head back, i came back from there via Swansea yesterday (i fly from Denham) was an amazing flight but was quite long. But I am sure you can cut it down somewhere along the line.

Have a good flight

Rocky

ps the Isle of Wight coast line at 500ft is lovely too taking in the needles etc. Just keep a good look out cos there will be lots of people doing the same thing

Aussie - agree with the rest about the Isle of Wight. Stunning views - The Needles etc. In Bembridge there is the Windmill to visit, or the Lifeboat Station.
If flying during the week try a call to Boscombe Down and a request for a couple of orbits over Stonehenge - now that would be some good photos to take back to Oz.
You could also get some photos of the Cerne Abbas Giant when you are out that way.....

Cheers

Certainly go for the IOW as part of the route. Overhead Portsmouth, RN fleet (Both carriers in last Saturday, Victory, HMS Warrior, the Solent forts (one with tennis courts and glassed in centre -some residence!!If time land at Bembridge and WALK east along the cliff top (30 mins) to the Crab and Lobster (busy on Sunday). Then Old Sarum or Compton Ablast for afternoon tea and go for the Stonehenge orbit or three. Check DA's with Lyneham if no answer from Boscombe over the w/e. Regimental symbols east of Compton (including some Oz regiments). This could be a fun trip with plenty to see!
have fun!!!
