This weather is really pi££ing me off
Arranged to take a work colleagues hubby to Duxford on Monday-no chance, the cloud at Cov was at 1200' all day (ATIS said 1800' but it was less as I went up to have a look). So as not to disappoint my guest I did some circuits.
Wx today-pretty much perfect
On the up side,he brought a neat bit of kit with him though-he makes GPS based dataloggers for race cars that output a vast array of data but has not tried it in an a/c before. He fixed one up by sticking a tiny video camera to the screen and the very small 'black box' on his lap. When we got home,SD card into my PC and presto, video of taxying out, lining up and circuits overlaid with time, groundspeed (displayed as a round analogue speedo),alt,lat/long,heading etc.Made up for the earlier disappointment.
What has happened to those crystal clear, frosty days with unlimited vis and no haze etc?
Frustrated

November through to mid December was pretty spanky. Got some fantastic flying in in just those conditions described. Managed to get the majority of my cross country training done during that time.
Poo weather now of course, but those six weeks more than made up for the abysmal summer!

It'll be fine next Wednesday. I've planned Coventry to Bembridge, Bembridge to Swansea, and back to Coventry. Clear blue skies are forecast with little wind and Viz 10+km............

Scotland had a few days of perfect conditions over Xmas, not a cloud to be seen, whole of the North CAVOK. Absolutely stunning.
Inverness airport covered in freezing fog every day, dont get me started

I went flying out of CVT on Monday - the Wx wasn't very good but had been great on Sunday!!! I had planned to go CVT - Sywell - CVT. I had forgotten that Sywell is closed on Mondays in any case (although NOTAM'd closed until 5/1/09). Turweston was also closed!
So I took a work colleague over Gaydon (work related), Silverstone, DTY VOR, Bruntingthorpe and back to CVT instead. Still a good days flying - its nice to need a little less height in a heli!
Lets hope for better Wx in 2009!

Same in ABZ tuscan - planned to head up to Inv for some sightseeing/circuits earlier in the week, but Fog/Low Cloud/etc etc every day this week so far. Wed looked promising and it was a beautiful morning (albeit at -4) then the fog rolled in

December has been the best flying month this year in central Scotland. Could this be a return to 1990s weather pattern?
I did my PPL between Feb and Sept '88 and can remember only 3 cancelled lessons.

On 27th Edinburgh had a similar TAF but Leuchars forecast was much better.
We decided to go but keep an eye on developements. The weather turned out fabulous. We could see Edinburgh from 40 miles away. Glasgow was under some very localised low cloud or fog and we heard the Aberdeen weather was poor, Oban was CAVOK with 40 miles
It was a similar story a couple of weeks previously when the east was forecast poor and the west good, but in fact was the other was round.
Maybe we're just lucky.
