To be clear

I received "line up and wait" which I did. When take off clearence wasn't given I then called "holding" a little time later, whilst sat on the runway.

The OP struck a chord with me since I too felt very uneasy, sitting on the runway unable to see what may have been coming towards me on final....

I hope you called "lined up" or "ready for departure", and not "holding". 'cause technically you were not holding and this may well confuse a controller into thinking you're not on the runway (or thinking that it's somebody else on the runway, or something else entirely).

Read,understand and practice CAP 413 and then remember ATC are paid to provide a service to you, not the other way round!
