setting up a group

Hi there,

myself and a fellow club member were looking into setting up a group to own an aircraft based in south west scotland. We tried advertising in the flying club but nobody was interested.

My collegue has been doing the negotiations with the people selling the aircraft we had in mind for touring and hes informed me that they are becoming a little p**sed off with the e-mails backward and forward.

If anyone has been in this situation............and has any tips on how to start up a group please contribute to this thread so we can take as much advice on board.

Regards

It can get a bit wearisom answering one question after another. Ideally you should aim to ask all your questions in batches, but if the answers lead to more questions...

Perhaps you and your friend should review the answers you have got so far and see just how far aware you are from being able to commission an engineers inspection of the aircraft. If you are still along way from being comfortable to spend any money on an inspection, perhaps you should give up on that particualr aircraft.

Starting a group can be difficult, I tried and failed. Luckily a share came up in a group that was already up and running, after about four months of trying.

Have you asked the groups operating our of your local field whether they would consider extending their membership to include you and your friend?

Best of luck

A common problem. The respondent is either illiterate (quite common these days) and is possibly embarrassed about it, or is trying to hide something. The indicator of the latter is that you ask 5 questions and he answers 4 of them, and avoids answering the 5th one in subsequent comms.

Very very occassionally somebody is just too busy.

The market is full of used planes. In general, it's a buyers market. I would look for another one.

About to take a fall?

A330 Dreamer you are about to make a very big mistake if what you want is hours towards your A330 dream then buying is not for you.

Most flying groups hate hours builders at they hog the aircraft for a few months and then move on leaving the group to pick up the fixed cost of the aircraft throughout the year.

If you do get the aircraft you will have a lot of capital invested and may not be able to sell the aircraft when you need the money for the ATPL training and you will still be paying the fixed charges wile trying to sell.
If you have a major problem tis will cost you big time to get the aircraft back in the air and because you will want to move on you won't get any of the return that a long time group member would.

This may seem a bleak picture that I am painting but I have seen it all before, if you go down this track you can kiss goodby to any chance of getting that ATPL soon because the aircraft will take all of your cash and more!

What you need is low risk low cost hours and that is why I am in business, leave the aircraft ownership untill you are flying a big jet and can truly enjoy aircraft ownership and reap the rewards for your investment.

Money pit.

And now that I am on the subject ask IO540 what he thinks of the general condition of the average UK based light aircraft and what it costs to maintain.
