Ben Nevis

Can anyone help me please with details of the nearest airfield or strip I can get my Rallye into for Ben Nevis. I can't see anything near on the charts. It will be my first trip up to Scotland and the whole place looks rather short of places to land.
Thanks.

Nearest landing site ...

You could try and get floats fitted .... and go for Loch Linnhe

There is a grass strip near Fort Augustus but don't know how long ago it was last used. I take it your Rallye has good short field performance .. ?

There is a great shortage of strips in that area. There was a proposal a few months back to establish a new strip at the old paper mill site at Corpach at the Fort William end of Loch Linnhe, but it has all gone quiet at the moment. I was there last week and had a look but there is no sign of it yet.

Your closest field is Oban.

Yes, but most of us in aviation don't rely on information that is a year old.

Thanks for the replies, I did of course see the previous thread but Lon Mil has said it for me. I was of course cheekily hoping for someone to offer use of their private strip which isn't in Lockyear's!

Well I suppose if you like driving it isn't. It's at least 3 hours by car from Cumbernauld to Fort William.

As regards private strips, there are none in the area. There used to be a private strip at Torlundy used by, I think, a Maule, but I don't think it's been in use for a few years now.

Your best bet is definitely Oban.

Private Strip

There is indeed a private strip (grass) on the hill just outside Fort Augustus that is used by the owner of the estate (Glendoe I believe). I don't believe the owner spends much time there and any approach I would suggest would have to be through the estate manager. It is curently used by the owner, I saw 3 aircraft there 3/4 weeks ago and periodically see the owner come & go. Fort Augustus is around 32 miles from Fort William. One current consideration is the construction of the hydro power station in the area, there is currently a workers camp & associated activity adjacent to the strip, but it is still in use.

Of course be aware of the very low flying military, I reckon it won't be much more than 300 feet above the strip.

Let us know how you get on if you do approach them.

After all the rain I would go for a hard runway, the closest is this:

These two are further North but still very close:

You have to be very lucky to see the Ben completely clear of cloud...
