I've heard about this video but never actually seen it........Wow....very scary...... been to "Peterborough-Sibson" a few times and always been very aware of the drop zone (just encourages you to maintain a good look out of the cockpit).

NOT keeping a good look out wasn't the main mistake. flying in an area that you are not supposed to is ridiculous.
we lads train in sibson is very well aware of the dropping zone. but shouldn't anyone else too? sibson isn't the only site that has Parasuiters jumping off nearby. no overhead join at sibson, no dead side north of the RWYs as that is where the drop zone is located. flying through without checking if the guys are jumping out of planes are active is just ignorant and poor airmanship?!?
lucky the guy survived and missed. and yes. this was shown in the safety evening that has been presented by a CAA guy. funny enough at sibson.

Keeping a good lookout is very much the point. That aircraft is visible in the shot from 2.5 seconds into the clip. When under canopy, there must be some small amount of manoeuverability. i.e. insted of dropping on a near collision course with the aircraft - try and put atleast a few feet separation into the situation if possible.
How many pilots look out for items on a constant bearing approaching the aircraft from almost vertically above. On a constant bearing means sitting still in the window. Would it have been a good idea for the para to complete some vigerous manoeuvres to a) try and avoid the aircraft by as much as possible and b) increase the chances of the pilot spotting them and assisting in the avoidance.
There is no legal requirement for aircraft to remain outside of Para drop zones. It is Class G and if people want to jump out of aircraft in class G then the risks are that such events could occur.
Under the ICAO NOTAM system, NOTAMS of para dropping are described as miscelaneous and are not normally included in pre-flight briefings!
However,

Flying through a well knowl published para zone is indeed poor airmanship. Just one of the many other aspects of airmanship that are not always up to scratch on flights that are legal.

Watching the clip, wasn't the guy in freefall until very nearly on top of the chipmunk?
Certainly there was virtually zero chance of the pilot seeing the parachutist, but no doubt if the parachutist had seen the aeroplane earlier he could have pulled the cord and there would have been no problem?

I believe in this case the parachutist was in free fall, and pulled his 'chute when he realised he was on collision course, and it deployed just in time to avoid the Chipmunk.
Not the first time Sibson have had aircraft pass over the drop zone, and, unfortunately it probably won't be the last.

Of course, there is the other side of the coin too.
Taking off from Headcorn many years ago, I heard the parahcute aircraft drop a stick of 6 and saw 5 'mushrooms' appear to my left.
After a tense few seconds, the sith appeared .... on the wrong side of the runway, thus 'bracketing' me, whilst low and slow.
Didn't appreciate that very much.

Personally I prefer taking off with the wing already flying

Judging by his reaction I don't think he saw it at all whilst waving-off.
It's easy to spot it after a couple of viewings but just because the camera picked it up doesn't mean he did.
They were both very lucky to get away with that.
