You are surely not suggesting that Gliding is not to be taken seriously.
I think you will find that a keen glider pilot who has got past his initial training and is part of a syndicate or even a sole owner, will do far more hours than a power pilot in a similar situation. (Unless the power guy is building hours for a commercial license.) It's a different type of flying and not in any way second rate.
Big advantage of gliding is that in the above situation,(private owner), once you are launched, there are no further charges so a 30 minute flight and an 8 hour flight cost the same, between £5 and £25, depending on launch method. This assumes that you do not have to be collected from a field in Little Sniggering.

A lot of people pay £350/month or more, sadly. Sadly, it is worth it if the plane has any decent avionics because even a single significant item is going to cost as much as a year's hangarage to replace.
