See http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthr...hreadid=156088 It'll tell you where to download LASORS 2005 (the CAA licensing, safety and operational requirements) document as a .pdf. LASORS 2005 (in the PPL section) will answer all your questions and many more besides!

Hi there,

Be careful as you'll get lots of critical responses regarding the use of the search button. As you're new to PPRuNe you'll take a while getting used to the nuances of the site, but it's well worth it for the budding student pilot. As for your question the easiest thing would be to talk to the flight school you are using, they'll tell you in simple terms exactly what you need to know about your training and the exams, but for what it's worth I think the gist of it is you must pass the following exams and have passed all of them within 18 months of taking the first. I don't think the 18 month rule applies to the R/T practical, but others will confirm or deny this for you. The exams (not in any specific order) are:

Air Law
R/T
Meteorology
Human Performance and Limitations
Navigation
Aircraft Technical and Flight Performance

I hope I haven't missed anything. For my studies I used the Trevor Thom series, but with hindsight I may have used the Jeremy Pratt series instead as they seem more easy to follow (for a thicko like me).

I paid to sit in on several groundschool tuition courses, this was money well spent, but not a requirement. If you are intelligent and already have a knowledge of these things then you might not need tuition further than your own studying.

Anyway good luck, stay with the programme it is really worth it.

Angel

Air Law
Meteorology
Human Performance and Limitations
Navigation
Aircraft Technical
Flight Planning (Which includes Mass & Balance and Performance)
Radio Telephony (Written)
Radio Telephony (Practical)

The exams are valid for 18 months. I used the J.Pratt books when I did mine, However I have since read the Thom books and they are also very good. The PPL confuser is good but dosn't teach you the subject (or include R/T questions) so use it after reading the textbooks. The PPL Keynotes for Pilots book is also a good study aid.

Regards

Also worth mentioning that when you HAVE passed them all, (within the 18 months period), that they are then valid for a further 24 months, in which time you must complete your actual PPL. If you don't, you will lose them, and have to resit.

following from maxflyer, the 18 month rule does not apply to r/t written or practical and can be taken whenever; as long as its before taking the skills test. also, what ariel said corrects what 2wings said about exam validity.
all the best

Welcome to Pprune! The exams are not major leage difficult (well the one's I have taken anyway). If you put the time in and read the books (and without a doubt the PPL Confuser) then you will be fine. Personally, I find the subjects interetsing (I guess I wouldnt be doing it if I didn't) so that is a major step I think.

With regards to the search button. We all ignored it when we started, in fact I ignored it quite a bit . It is sometimes difficult for certain things as you cant have any less than 3 characters in a search. Dont ever feel ashamed, or reluctant to post, this is a fantastic forum, and i a few months down the line, when you become hooked like the rest of us, you will know what I am talking about

I am also a student, and if you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

Best of luck with your training,

Maz

I used airquiz.com to help prepare for all of the exams - I found it to be an incredibly useful site. Give it a look, it certainly lets you see what you're letting yourself in for.
