Spitoon - I take your point and agree with it entirely. I suppose I just have the mindset that if it looks, sounds, smells, feels and tastes like separation, I might as well call it that.

but clearing you through at 300ft vfr gives me some wriggle room

Try asking for a SVFR crossing of a certain military aerodrome's Class D CTR at night! Always worth a giggle as they try to find the rules for SVFR flight in their books!
