Airbedane
He may very well have been the chap how showed me around the Vulcan on my first visit in 1991, I think I spent the best part of an hour in there. Fascinating.

No Airbedane, unfortunately I never had the pleasure. I was there from about 1997 I think. There are still some great characters ... I miss volunteering.

I've taken the liberty of creating a fly-in page at thehangar.co.uk as nobody else has done it yet.
Now, how do we go about organising that DC-3 ride and booking seats, paying deposit etc.?

Sorry to disappoint, DOC.400, but he was a toolmaker by trade. He did just under 30 yrs with the GEC in Coventry, a short time with AW, then moved to the Torrington Bearing Company. He retired thro' medical pbs in 1970-something and spent his time talking to anyone who would listen from then until 1995 - which is why he liked the MAM.

The chap who gave me and a couple of pals a tour was apparently ex Hurricane pilot with a son or son-in-law who was ex-Vulcan. He sat us all down in the various seats, and then told us what our role would be in the seat we were sitting in -both fascinating and scarey and so real!!

Mike, it doesn't matter either way. I live next to the cement works!
From the Coventry Airport webiste:
No aircraft built prior to 1960, not flying a public transport flight, will be required to pay a landing fee.

I double-checked the info re no landing fees at Coventry for pre-1960 aircraft a couple of days ago and was told that it is important to get PPR for the visit, or they may still charge.
Guess I'll be bringing my 1958 yellow Jodel.

MikeSamuel,
That photo makes me feel old too! But it's one of the few photos of me that I actually like, so I'm glad that was the one you posted.

Hello Guys
I'm the chief pilot of the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire air ambulance unit based at Coventry.
Just seen this thread on web site.
If you want to you are all welcome to visit the air ambulance base (top floor of fire station) and crawl round aircraft.
If so send me a message, or call airfield and ask for Air Ambulance unit.

Hello Everybody Again!
I have recieved quite a few emails from people wanting a wander round our operation.
I can not arrange a time as we are operational 08:00 to 17:30 and we may be out on task.
If the aircraft is outside on the pad, then just pop round.
If you could all arrange to visit in one group rather than lots of small ones that would make our life a bit easier.
See you later

Is it still going ahead?
I heard from a source that a fly-in wasn't possible that weekend, possibly due to Coventry being busy.
Any info from the organisers?

GtW, you can't be serious? Is he mad. I know Luke posts on here occasionally so I'll tell him for you. Are you mental? Turning down a confirmed booking.......
Go to Fowlmere, they have got nice machines and no daft policy like that.

Classic,
I believe the post 1960 landing fee is 1.5 pence per kg, i.e. £15 per tonne, but charged on your exact MTOW, not rounded up to the next tonne.
Not sure of the AVGAS price, but larger airfields are usually cheaper than smaller airfields in my experience. Coventry's AVGAS throughput must be high with the big four-engined (piston) aircraft they operate out of there.
