Flight Computer
Hi,
I am going to do my PPL soon, but eventually I want to go on to be a commercial pilot. Is it worth getting the CRP-5 computer now or should I just get the CRP-1 computer and upgrade later.
In the Thom book he uses the CRP-1 diagrams in his examples and I thought it may be a little easier to understandhow he came to his answers if I had the same equipment as him.
What do you think?
Thanks
James

I bought the CRP-5 for the reason that I want to go onto commercial after PPL. You'll find that it being a slightly different computer makes no difference (and if someone does look a little wrong, it does come with a user manual that explanes how to use it quite well). It might also make things easier on the wind side as it is a much bigger computer than the CRP-1 - the slide rule side is the same as on the CRP-1 except that it has a few more features that are needed for ATPL but can be ignored for PPL. In short it's a very good computer and well worth it and really won't cause you any problems.

Definately go for the CRP-5. I made the mistake and got the smaller version and ended up with 2!!
I got the PPL version in one of those "packages" that come with a chart and the required study texts plus other goodies. Might take a bit of negotiation and payment of some more cash to get the CRP-5 included as I haven't seen them advertised but worth a try nevertheless.

I have a Jeppesen Techstar flight computer for sale, you can see it in the Transair catalogue, page 31. As new with manual and case. Cost new was £69 95, I will take £45 for it if anybody is interested. I use my gps for the same calculations at present so never use it. e-mail me at [email protected] if interested.
