Shunter 25th July 2011 21:03

And not before time!

Bravo :ok:

empacher48 25th July 2011 22:19

Very impressed, once I figured out how to drive it!

Tinstaafl 26th July 2011 03:19

Why does it need to access phone state & identity, and location?

MikeNYC 26th July 2011 04:47

Any way to just enable the board for Tapatalk, a tried-and-true app that also has a solid iPad version available? It's compatible with vBulletin.

lexxity 26th July 2011 08:27

Any chance of a crackberry one?

Capn Bloggs 26th July 2011 10:28

Android 2.3.4 (Nexus S): The home page FORUMS (dropdown) button leads to a black and white "Select Content Type - Forums" screen, but tapping "Forums" does nothing. :{

However, the Forums link on the Menu list works OK.

Now I can Prune on the turnaround! Excellent! Thanks very much. :ok:

west lakes 26th July 2011 13:14

Cool, like it

shootr 26th July 2011 15:05

The iOS app does not seem to store bookmarks on threads I've already been reading on...both after reading the threads on my phone and/or on the web. Other than that, pretty nice.

willy wombat 26th July 2011 15:57

Very nice, thanks. To make it easier for less pc literate ppruners to find the iphone app why not mention in your announcement that for iphone or ipad just go to the App Store. Under "search", all you need to type is ppru and up comes the App. Cheers.

Do like :)

KBPsen 26th July 2011 20:39

Tinstaafl wanted to know why this app needs/have access to phone state & identity and location, so do I. It would also be interesting to know why it needs/have access to the camera and SD card?

This application has access to the following:

  • Hardware controls take pictures and videos
Allows application to take pictures and videos with the camera. This allows the application at any time to collect images the camera is seeing.
  • Your location coarse (network-based) location
Access coarse location sources such as the cellular network database to determine an approximate device location, where available. Malicious applications can use this to determine approximately where you are.
  • Network communication full Internet access
Allows an application to create network sockets.
  • Phone calls read phone state and identity
Allows the application to access the phone features of the device. An application with this permission can determine the phone number and serial number of this phone, whether a call is active, the number that call is connected to and the like.
  • Storage modify/delete USB storage contents modify/delete SD card contents
Allows an application to write to the USB storage. Allows an application to write to the SD card.

Bravo!

Got it!
Great job:D.

Thanks for all the input, everyone.

To answer a few questions:

Tapatalk - We are in talks with them, but those have not reached any actionable business level yet.

Blackberry - We currently have no plans for a Blackberry app.

App access to phone functions -

Hardware controls: Allows photo upload to forum.
Storage: For app's caching functionality.
Location, network communication, phone status: Ad support.

Hope that helps!

PPRuNe iPhone app

First post. Woohoo!

Thanks folks.

FWIW it is better on iPhone than iPad as it is not customised for the larger screen so the web browser works better.

Load Toad 27th July 2011 06:26

Like it. Very nice - first glance, very quick & easy to read through the threads, clear navigation. Will play more.

livetokill22 27th July 2011 06:39

It was about time, this should have been done a long time ago. :)
Landscape orientation on the iPhone would be appreciated.
Thanks for the app. :D

livetokill22 27th July 2011 06:45

And notifications for subscribed posts would be swell on the iOS !

Going Boeing 27th July 2011 09:12

Great app

Having the same problem as Bloggs (on HTC Sensation Android 2.3.3) with the Forums button on the screen but works via the Menu button.

Load Toad 27th July 2011 14:40

Small issue - a clear button for posting replies to threads might be an idea.

Otherwise I rather like it.

timmcat 28th July 2011 12:08

Brilliant on the iPhone. Well done.

J.O. 28th July 2011 12:20

Thanks! Overall I really like the iPhone version, just a couple of suggestions.

The ability to rotate to landscape view would be very nice. Also, I noticed on a lengthy thread such as "AF447 wreckage found", the list of pages at the top only goes up to 11 with no possibility to scroll or drag to allow access to the rest of the pages. The only way to get to the later pages is to scroll down and wait as it loads each page at the bottom, which clogs up the cache.

CharlieOneSix 28th July 2011 18:58

J.O. - found out by accident that if you drag, ie scroll, the page list quickly to the left you get access to all the other pages above 11.

codenamejames 28th July 2011 22:07

Unless I've missed something, the iPhone version doesn't embed images, so you need to view each individual post separately to view any images.
I'm going back to viewing the regular pprune site on safari...

BrandiNettIB 28th July 2011 22:14

Re: images, the tech team says,

"The images intentionally don't load to reduce load time (and bandwidth costs) over networks".

If others are also not into that, please chime in.

Keef 29th July 2011 00:38

It works, but doesn't recognise my "subscribed" forums. It shows me three threads that expired in 2006 that it thinks I want to follow.

I'll stick with the button that starts Safari and takes me to the User CP.

IanPZ 30th July 2011 17:12

Anyone worked out the significance of the blue blob before a thread title, I'd the red or green post counts after a thread title?

Oh, by the way, any chance in Android of making it less of a memory hog? I moved it to sdcard, but it still uses something like 4M of internal memory.

Having said all of that, still a good app, and I hope with improvements it will become the main way I access pprune. Thanks!

ILblog 30th July 2011 17:54

Great job

iPad version wanted also.

As I see around most of pilots DO have iPad (probablly just because of Jeppcharts app)

BrandiNettIB 1st August 2011 18:59

ILblog - The iOS app is available here:
PPRuNe App for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

Keep the technical issues and questions coming, everyone. I will collect them this week and present them to our tech team.

ejectx3 3rd August 2011 05:43

"Go to last unread post" doesnt work, using phone 3GS

And yes what do all the symbols mean? Ie red /blue dots etc?

Out Of Trim 4th August 2011 20:20

Poor on iPad

OK I suppose on iPhone; but, quite disappointing on the iPad.

Going back to a normal browser for the full experience. For PPruNe I usually manage OK using the Atomic Browser on both. ;)

Stockpicker 4th August 2011 20:51

If there was ever time and resource, I'd also like to put in a request for a Blackberry app - cheers, chaps!

BrandiNettIB 4th August 2011 21:44

I don't have an iPad, so I can't see the functionality there.

What improvements would make the iPad experience better?

BrandiNettIB 5th August 2011 23:32

OK, just got word from the tech team:

"The app works fine on the iPad functionally wise, it just isn’t an iPad specific app, and may not be as aesthetically pleasing".

So they actually advise using a regular web browser with an iPad :)

IanPZ 11th August 2011 23:40

memory hungry

Guys, run in to a potential issue for the HTC Android phones (i have a desire). The app is hugely memory hungry. I moved the app to sdcard so as to reduce its footprint. Still leaves 2.35M on internal....

And then there is the data. I just looked at it, and it was caching all the forum posts I'd looked at on internal, rather than sdcard storage. The result is that the app had grown to consuming 7M internal storage, despite being on sdcard.

I have cleared it down now, but this is something that needs fixing, otherwise it is a dead end for many usrs. Memory management on the Android is a big issue!
Thanks
IPZ

Jumpjetter 25th August 2011 06:43

1. Every time you refresh it marks READ items as UNREAD
2. There needs to be a way to quickly navigate to a favorite forum. To long to drill down.
3. Need an option to "scroll to last post" in the thread like Tapatalk has.
4. Landscape mode?
5. Last post doesn't work

iPhone 4

Firestorm 6th September 2011 20:00

Any chance of a windows phone 7 app? I know it isn't a very well received operating system, and is poorly supported by apps, hasn't sold well and all that sort of thing.

BrandiNettIB 6th September 2011 21:16

We currently don't have plans to develop a Windows app, but who knows - that could change given enough demand!

Lon More 9th September 2011 10:18

still trying to figure the new phone out. Managed to download it. Just need a microscope App to read it.
