As far as I know, smoking is banned on all commercial flights now, and I don't think any airlines allow it anymore. The illuminated signs are probably there for safety and to serve as a clear reminder, especially in case of emergencies. Simple stickers might seem like a cheaper option, but having a visible, illuminated sign can make a big difference when you're in a packed cabin.

For those who still want to enjoy something while flying, I recommend checking out alternatives like e-cigarettes. I’ve found some good options at e-zigaretteria that could be more convenient for travel.

Back in the day, I remember Flight's Roger Bacon recommending non-smokers to book smoking-seats, in order to crowd-out the smokers!

So crazy that they ever allowed smoking in a narrow aluminum tube in the sky lol.

Banned since January on the flight deck of Chinese civil aircraft. In China, some 60% of surgeons still smoke, some even while operating, so aviation is in the forefront compared with other professions. Remind me not to get appendicitis or get run over if I visit China.

Not sure about smoking on flight decks in Iran, but I'm never going back there. The country is full of lunatics, and most of the most certifiable seem to be Tehrani taxi drivers. One of the joys of being retired is that I don't have to go to Iran any more.

Oh, and the last airline to allow smoking in the cabin was SA Cubana de Aviacion in 2014.

In the 1970s and 80s, my Uncle complained, "If you wish to not see the film and to smoke - the 747 is a three row aeroplane." Only the last three rows of Y met his requirements! He was not a large man so the seats were not a problem. He died of lung cancer ...

The last flight I had with smoking was a Swiss Air flight from Zurich to Singapore in June or July 1999 - I had to get to Bali from UK for a mate's stag and that was the cheapest option. It was 12 hours of purgatory. Luckily I had managed to get an SQ flight back direct to London on miles.

Despite the clear cabin announcements, on a recent long-haul flight you could occasionally smell the perfumed vape 'aroma' coming from the aft lavatories area.
