APD for youths
Just booked some tickets using Tripsta for me and my two children aged 16 and 12. Despite putting in my daughter's age (12) she has been charged full fare. I queried this based upon the fact that she does not need to pay APD but they simply said that it is a new rule with airlines that there are now only four 'titles' ; Mr, Mrs and two others and all women are classed as Mrs over age 12 so pay full APD.
This seems nonsense and I have queried it, but can someone point me toward: -
A) the details of the change in designation for Mr, Mrs etc
B) the APD rule for children aged 12 - 15
C) if I am right, how I persuade them to refund my money.
Thanks

I reckon they owe you as they are wrong.
Government regs show the age limit was 12 yrs and under for exemption until March 2016 when this was changed to 16 yrs.
See: https://www.gov.uk/government/public...passenger-duty
Go to section 3.1.2 Children.

There are no "new rule with airlines". An airline may have changed it's rule, (and others followed). Check out BA's website, they have many more than four ...
I'd call the airline, it's likely they have the money. I'd also call the daily mail, they can sell a few billion additional papers with a scandal like this.

I have done a number of things....
1. Found the regulations and sent them to Tripsta who on three occasions now have denied they owe me a refund ;
2. Emailed the travel section of the Daily Telegraph but without response so far;
3. Emailed IATA who are a bunch of toothless clowns;
4. Spoken to Lufthansa who agreed with me but said Tripsta need to contact them (Tripsta won't do this); and
5. Spoken to my credit card company who were very helpful and offered to refund me the APD but said it might mess up the booking.
Well we'll see what happens. The difference between the various quotes was modest enough and the flights are not till next Easter.

So, a reply from the DT. Tripsta are right to classify her as an adult, but didn't comment about whether she should be charged APD. I have requested further info.
Tripsta say they will now speak to Lufthansa. So we shall see...
