If it was me, and I am a snorer, I'd appreciate being gently woken up (hand on shoulder, gentle shake) if I was disturbing other passengers. In fact I am quite used to this, and apparently it is an effective technique. According to various seat mates I don't often snore when sleeping on a plane, but it has been known to happen.
Being poked by a pen? I would not appreciate that.

A simple tap of the seat back is just as effective and you don't need to physically touch anyone or invade their private space. I wouldn't recommend anyone touch a fellow passenger especially not with the jab of a pen!

'Basic Civility'? Snoring can sound bad but not personal assault bad.
When I was first a Pax (over 49 years ago) my parents told my siblings we had to behave as if we were in the living room of our parent's friends. Now folks seem to think that it's their OWN personal living room.
