Georgia USA likes guns

Extract from: The US state that?s decided it's alright to bring your gun to church - Americas - World - The Independent
Extract starts:
On Thursday night, Georgia’s state House of Representatives passed a pro-gun bill by a landslide 112-58 vote, allowing people to carry firearms in bars, restaurants, churches, airports and primary school classrooms.
Georgia’s Republican Governor, Nathan Deal, is expected to sign the law, which will offer religious leaders the choice to allow guns into their places of worship. The bill permits gun owners to carry loaded firearms in bars, as long as they don’t consume any alcohol. Bar owners who would prefer their patrons not to carry weapons must display a sign to that effect on the door.
Under the new law, any local school district that deems firearms a suitable deterrent against attack can appoint staff members to carry guns in schools.
Georgia citizens will be allowed to tote their weapons in libraries, sports grounds and youth centres. Those with a firearms permit will even go unpenalised if they’re found with a gun at a security checkpoint in an airport.
Extract ends:
Happily, this only applies within the State of Georgia ...
Now, I am not one of those who thinks that the politicians mania for banning things has made us safer but, looking at the history of guns in the USA, this does not bode well.

Apparently guns remain banned in the Capital building and legislator's offices. Can't have the yokels taking out their elected representatives. Apparently it's OK to take out TSA personnel, as long as it's done outside of the secure area.

It begs the question of whether the airport and airlines have no say, or if they actually approve of guns being lawful there. As for the Churches, perhaps they regard the 3rd Commandment as not applying to them.

I was going to post it in Jet Blast but I thought that it's been quiet in here recently and some might find it amusing.
If you read the whole article it is a good giggle.

Taking a gun along to church?? Is this some kinda move to get the quality of the church sermons improved?
Sounds to me like they're already a little confused about which God to worship, and they need some improved sermons.

This is common in the south and not limited to Georgia. When you live somewhere where there are this many guns the common fear is only the unlawful that posses guns will carry. I live in a suburb of a decent sized southern city, was not born here (in this culture) but do own several guns. As of recent I have thought seriously of getting my carry permit, criminals are seeking more and more to commit violent crime out in the suburbs.
I do not worry about anyone breaking into my house at nite as history has shown it is a certain death sentence. Everyone has a gun in their home here, everything from tactical shotguns to high cap handguns to high cap "sporting" rifles. I worry about my home getting broken into in the daytime when people think I may be at work (my wife knows how to click off a safety and pull a trigger).
I was not born in this country and have had to adapt to different cultures, just wanted to share my experience with "ya'll". I want to help you understand the difference in culture from what is normal to you, it is nothing more.
One thing that is a bit over the top to me is the pistol wielding pilot who can carry on domestic flights as a (special permit) Air Marshall. The most dangerous thing in an aircraft is a pilot!

It isn't responsible (and properly trained) people with guns that scares me, it's idiots with guns. People so irresponsible with often loaded weapons who forget they are carrying and then get caught at security should not be given a get out of jail free card.
People like these should be taken out of the gene pool and prohibited from ever again possessing dangerous weapons. There is no excuse for such stupidity.

Thanks grounded27, very interesting. I have spent a fair amount of my time in South Africa (with family and friends still there) and so I do understand something of the culture. South Africa is very American in many, many ways.
I do see that the actions by law abiding citizens is a natural response and that this circle of carrying arms goes way back. Unfortunately, the circle will continue ...
Further, I am sure that something similar will happen here in the UK (is happening here), albeit on a slower timescale. I posted the article more for amusement as it is a fact that I accept.
