maglite in carry on?

I am travelling to Birmingham UK this weekend from Dublin, and I wanted to take a maglite with me in my Carry on bag.
Reason being - I bought the torch in London a month ago and it was defective. The shop I purchased it from sent me a stamped envelope to return it in. I'm based in Ireland and the stamps are UK, so thought I could save myself a few quid and pop it in a letterbox when I am in Birmingham.
The torch is the 2d battery type - approx 250mm in length and 40mm diameter.
It would be in the padded envelope the shop gave me and without the batteries.

Do any of you seasoned travellers know if this would be an issue going through security in Dublin?

Probably.

The size and weight make it comparable with a large hand tool - spanner. wrench - which are limited (in the UK) to hold luggage

I'd take the safe option and check it in.

I'd also suggest calling/mailing the airline and asking them, take the answer with you...but to be fair, I'd check it in anyway.

Is it a size and weight that it could be used as a blunt object weapon? If it could then I doubt if you would be allowed to carry it on. However, who knows what security will do on the day.

if you don't want to risk losing it, check-it.

Angry

This just shows how ridiculous the security situation is, you probably won't be able to take your torch for the fear that the security man/lady might deem it a blunt object that you could use as a weapon. As soon as you are through the security though, you're faced with the duty free shop where you can buy lots of bigger and heavier blunt objects that can equally be used as weapons, bottles of booze!!

The airline won't make a call on it - they're contracted to get you and your luggage from point A to point B, not to interpret the rules of HM Govt.

Absolutely, but try that telling that to the security operative. (And they're not all jobsworths...)

ok - I don't think I will take the chance.
Since i am not checking in a bag, it will work out cheaper to just pay for the postage from Ireland.

Thanks one and all for the replies.

To be fair a D-cell maglite would serve extremely well as a weapon and I'm sure many people buy the big maglites because of their multi-role functionality. If some villain was breaking into my house in the dead of night, a firm tap on the bonce with my 3D maglite would most likely resolve the situation until the constabulary or the coroner arrive. Much as I love berating airport security drones, removing a viable weapon would seem quite reasonable.

Min is in my car and once, on arriving home (at a former address) finding two men scaling the fence into the backgarden - I picked it out from the door pocket as I got out. I held it reversed, so that the bulb head was in my hand to keep it firm if I had to swing the torch.

But if you take the batteries out and leave them at home the torch becomes ever so fairy light.

Sounds vaguely Max Mosley...

I have travelled with a maglite in my carry-on on hundreds of flights over many years, albeit of smaller dimentions than yours. Never had any problem whatsoever.

But … if you buy batteries airside! You could also buy batteries airside and put them in your sock, but why do that when you can buy a heavy glass bottle.

Likely at the discretion (I use that word loosely) of the security guy, on the day, and no arguing. My wife had a 'Swiss card' taken at YVR because it was dangerous! The letter opener, pin and nail file all less than 5cm, and they sell them airside at GVA.

Yup, lost a Swiss Card at Gatwick a couple of years ago. All within specifications. All less dangerous than the steel capped boots (I could have had in my cabin bag) and the bottle of booze I did not buy and the 17" laptop I did not have in my hand ...
