Virgin savages Watchdog

According to this WATCHDOG JULIA IN FLIGHTS PROBE - mirror.co.uk Virgin have cancelled the frequent flyer card of one of the Watchdog presenters.

It seems she was getting air miles added when she redeemed them.

Plod are now involved.

Watchdog is a UK TV consumer programme which exposes dodgy business activities and the like.

If she was getting FFMs added to her account at the wrong time - that would have been done by VS staff.

Yup - thats the airline's fault, not hers. I think cancelling her membership is a bit extreme - could have just deducted the points incorrectly credited...

This article does not make sense.

No doubt there are a number of pertinent facts missing.

A Virgin Atlantic employee has been sacked over allegations she received gifts including Marks & Spencer vouchers in exchange for awarding airmiles
I think is the pertinent quote.
I doesn't say who gave the VA employee the "gifts"

That's why it doens't make sense to me, especially as the passive voice is used.

Many people receive M&S vouchers for doing their job; of course, the implication here is that certain people bribed an airline staff member to defraud the company, but without the facts to back it up, it does not make sense.

Innocent until proven guilty and no doubt it will all come out in the wash.

Word is that Virgin have sent bills to cover the costs of flights to those who allegedly knew they should not have been receiving the free upgrades - one is as high as sixty thousand pounds

I still don't get this - if any pax were given upgrades or FFMs that they were not entitled to, then how can you attempt to surcharge them?

I realise, of course, that a travel correspondent could be expected to know that this was wrong and, in failing to report this to the airline became complicit in the scam - but - to surcharge? There must be more to this.

it makes brilliant commercial sense!

give people loads of free airmiles "by mistake"
wait until they've used them
demand payment for the flights they took, reagardless of whether they would have paid the full fare anyway

To clarify: The allegation is that an employee of Virgin falsified a number of f/f accounts in return for which the said employee received gifts from the same account holders. Thats bribery.

The people holding those accounts then took free flights/upgrades in the full knowledge that they were not entitled to them. One of them is alleged to have taken £60k worth of freebies. Thats criminal theft and a serious one given quantum involved, possibly fraud and I dare say a few other things as well.

I agree, however the issue originally raised is that the article is so thin on the ground with regard to any relevant content you can't really make out one way or the other who the allegation is against etc

other explanations

it could be that the VS staff member received M&S vouchers from Joe Public as a thank you after untangling a particular nasty complaint. It would be hard to prove collusion in this case. We've all sent flowers etc to somebody after they've gone above and beyond to help fix something.

Now if there was a pattern, here's 10K mile, oh there's a voucher, over and over, then that's different!

Could job we retain the adversarial system of justice administered by our peers, and not just judge based on a newspaper story!

Hmmm interesting but Journos getting upgraded on planes in not an unlnown thing.

An Airline just insures it gets good headlines or maybe not to many negative headlines by keeping some people happy. As Burnside of BA PR said its just another cost if doing business.
