Needlework equipment on board

Planning a trip to NZ : LHR - Hong Kong - Auckland - San Francisco - LHR and will be flying Virgin Atlantic and Air New Zealand. Can anyone advise about security concerns for needlework equipment in carry-on luggage and use in the cabin (economy) for these airports and carriers.

Specifically my wife would like to carry :
  • small metal sewing needles for cross-stich
  • knitting needles (plastic is suspect might be easiest)
  • crochet hooks (again plastic unless metal are specifically allowed)
  • a special pendant thread cutter where there is no exposed blade rather than scissors
Thanks

Brian

in my current position as security supervisor at an secret airport somewhere in britain, i can tell you that if i came across these items i would allow the first three to travel. i'm unsure what the fourth item actually is, so without seeing it i can't say....

knitting needles have been allowed for some time as have other previously 'banned' items as DoT have updated their list...... although it must be said that no specific list is set in stone, and therefore could easily be reversed!! but at the end of the day, it could even go down to the individual that opens your bag!!

hope this is of help!!
