Talking Seats 747 (400)

Flying virgin LGW-ANU (Antigua- econonmy) next month and I think aircraft on that haul is 747 (400). Never been on 747 can anyone advise seating arrangement ie 2x3x2 etc, also is there any seats in economy worth trying to go for ie exit etc re comfort (6ft 3in ) and whats the best way of getting them. Of course could always upgrade I hear you say but I think £800 for two persons just to upgrade premium economy is a bit steep, matter of view I guess and I'm sure if did upgrade one would never like to go back to economy. In the good old days would do a nice letter to captain show my little bit of paper and spend some time up the sharp end...but alass.

Thanks for any info.

Its a while since I flew with Virgin but the 747's then were 3-4-3 in economy, 2-2 upstairs in premium and 2-2-2 in upper class.
Turn up early, smartly dessed and be polite. I am a similar height so I usually ask at check in if its possible to have an exit row.

£800 is good value IMHO for the difference in enviroment, but that's a personal judgement.

Don't like 3-4-3 on a 747 - it's a sardine experience.

HP,

You'll be on one of VS's 'Gatwick fleet'. This is the bucket and spade brigade, ex-NZ aircraft.

The config is as under_exposed describes. The Y seats are the older variety, but actually better than the newer models on VS A340's (slightly wider and slightly more legroom). Premium on the upper deck is good value due to config , seat, and crew availability. Upper Class uses old Recaro seats (Not VS product) and should be avoided!

VS are currently selling exit row seats, best to give their Reservations line a call and see how this works.

Have a great trip.

Well have raided the piggy bank and up-graded to PE -VS033 19/05/04 (special treat for Mrs Holdposition 25 years and all that), so this will be a first. By all accounts it seems Virgins PE is one of the best so looking forward to a pleasent trip and you never know we might be very lucky and have PAXboy on board, we live in hope. Thanks for all the help.

Bob- The Lgw fleet are not ex NZ aircraft or ex anything else for that matter. they were originally intended for AZ and when they cancelled we got them (apparently for a good price). so they entered service brand new with us. Also the legroom in Y is standard across our fleet, there is just a bigger Y cabin on these aircraft.

PE is of course a lot nicer and much more private and personal so enjoy your trip to Antigua...

Antigua? Been on my shopping list for years, friends of mine have been a couple of times (on VS) and speak highly of the route and destination.

My only trip to that area was Jamaica in [thinks] 1989 and went on BA 'Y' with then g/friend. We had the exit row seats at the over-wing exits, which was GOOD but many children then used the open space as their playground, which was BAD.

I remember the flight for the fact that, the Carribbean lady in the third seat with us was carrying all her precious hats with her. On her head ... she had piled one on top of another, so that they would not get damaged and she did not have to carry them by hand!!
