Ehhh
Wish the award paid more then I could have both :{ |
I own a copy of every type of iPad, and have been working with them from 2 months before they were available in Aus. Have rolled out several thousands of them over the past three years, lost count of the actual numbers, but I'm up to 600 odd this year (my day job is in education)
In all that time I've had just 2 DOA and 2 original iPads that suffered premature battery death. All replaced under warranty. Not bad quality control, you'd have to be unlucky to get a dud one. They can also survive a hell of a beating and still be usable. I had one that was 'banana'd', glass all but destroyed, and still worked, but the home button was intermittent! (Didn't get warranty on that one!!!) (Despite all that, my preferred backup is paper!) |
Just noticed that whilst in nav mode it says in fine print at the bottom left hand corner that the map is not to scale, do not use for navigation. What's the go there? Based on that statement I assume you would need to also carry paper charts.
What are the legal technicalities of this? |
WW that's modified in the next version to reflect the CASA approval of maps as a data source under CAR233. Don't have the exact text on me but its something like 'Not in native scale due zooming' and Mercator projection. Essentially don't measure the map with a ruler and expect distances to be 1:500k like the fixed size paper version.
Mercator projection means straight lines are Rhumb lines instead of approximating great circle (most of the maps come as Lambert Conformal Conic originally but that's no good for computers). The practical difference is minimal. |
I'm stuck with paper as well as my iPads since the CP's word is law.

On a ligher note, don't do this with your iPad: |
Oz Runways Weight and Balance
Hi all,
I am setting up a weight and balance through Oz Runways on my Ipad. Ive got all my information entered but the ARM in inches doesn't add up to my paper version. I am wondering if anyone has set up a weight and balance for a Cessna172 on Oz Runways? Any help would be appreciated! :ok: |
Hi this is probably best suited for help.ozrunways.com than its own thread here.
Also try watching the video: OzRunways Documentation / Getting Started / Knowledge Base - OzRunways Support |
One for the OzRunways gurus...
The 250K Topographic map is listed as a 1.7GB (1652.6MB in OzRunways) download, but on trying to download the whole shebang, the IPad has blown past 2,000MB downloaded and was stopped at 2,300MB with no end in sight. Reckon there's a glitch somewhere, or can't my iPad count? |
Definitely 1.7gb - not sure what you're seeing there...if it doesn't work send me an email at help.ozrunways.com and we'll look into it further.
The files are hosted on the Akamai content delivery network (CDN) which is just about as certain as death & taxes to work properly. |
I got it perfectly and it is impressive, best map on the program I reckon! Whoever would have thunk to include that. I have purchased maps for another App that aren't as good!
Thank you! |
Downloaded and worked fine for me......
|
Buggered if I know what i did, but when I went to resume the download, I got a 'Complete, 1652.6 Used' message and a 'Delete' option straight away, and it appears to be working without problems.
Just for grins, I deleted the Topo map and re-downloaded it and it behaved as it should, so NFI what happened the first time. Now onto the compliment...to whomever thought it would be a good idea to include the 250K Topo map, it is. Well done. |
ETA for full NZ Data?
Any idea when we can expect full NZ data and maps?
PG |
NZ maps tricky - they aren't offering much data down there. It's very expensive and no IFR stuff. Nowhere near the level of product offered by AsA.
We've imported all the waypoints and navaid data from official AIS databases in Europe. The terrain maps I made myself (I hope you like!) but we'll keep working on adding more as we can. We've already got the airspace working for NZ. From the little cogs menu choose airspace and choose CTA, CRT and PRD. Then you can double-tap on the screen in NZ and select which airspace to choose from the list. The airspace should also show up in the horizontal terrain just like Australia. We'll keep working on getting the official raster maps, but impossible to tell if we'll have any success. |
They still draw their maps by hand in Enzed and pass them around for their friends to use........

OzRunways 2.whoa!
Hey guys, I have a wireless only ipad 4. Absolutely stoked with the app but, have trouble getting/maintaining a fix. After reading a few threads etc I have discovered that due to not having the "cell" model iPad, I should buy an external GPS receiver.
Any thoughts on which would be the best bluetooth receiver to buy for iPad 4? Cheers! |
I've seen the bad elf GPS work very well with wifi ipad.
|
I'm using a Garmin GLO, AUD$119, works perfectly.
|
OzRunways 2.whoa!
Thanks guys.
RS: how do you go with mounting the GLO? Does it need to be positioned on the dash with a clear view above and does it have a grippy bottom or suction cup? Also, any recommended places to buy it? Cheers |
I'm with you Stallie...the Bad Elf has the 'pictorial' numbers which I find more 'convincing' than just a green light.....
ONYA oz.runways for the updates, and the service!! :):) |
I'm using the Dual XGPS 150 with my adevices (it works just as well with idevices). It looks to be smaller than that Garmin thingee. It comes with a velco wrist strap (good for hooking/hanging on anything sticking out) and a non-slip rubber mount for putting on dash (not attached in any way, secured by g-ravity). But, it only provides a Bluetooth signal for 1 device (as appears to be the case for the Garmin too).
The Bad Elf Pro, on the other hand, provides a signal for 5 devices, but is double-ish the price. If others on board want a GPS signal too, the Bad Elf Pro is the way to go. |
I am sure its been covered before but with all these pages its easier to ask again sorry:
I am flying along on a plan and want to add a waypoint near my track but when I touch it and add it to the plan I get a track to it from my final destination, what am I missing? Can I just add it so it diverts my current track? |
Tap on the pink track line, it turns to yellow with a fuzzy pink thing on it and drag this to your off track waypoint. Pick out the appropriate way point from the drop down box and then "select insert into plan".

OzRunways 2.whoa!
Hi guys,
Also, while we're on the subject of tracks - is there any way to mark the time you are in a certain position on your track? Same as you would when following a pencil line on a paper chart so you can keep an eye on where you are/were for revising ETA/position reporting etc..... Cheers |
So easy when you know how! Thanks Budgie and Shagpile, works a treat.
|
I'm impressed with the latest update out today. Maps work beautifully on the my new iPad mini I was fiddling with. Great work guys!
|
Yeah the new update fixes the dreaded black map tiles waiting for the internet to load (previously not a problem with no internet, or fast internet). Now should work really well on bad internet too (the kind that times out but takes 10 seconds before it gives up and moves onto the next tile).
Probably dropping a user waypoint using the little teardrop button at the top is what you are after to log positions (it spits one out under your present position. Also useful for SAR's or a variety of applications). |

RS: how do you go with mounting the GLO? Does it need to be positioned on the dash with a clear view above and does it have a grippy bottom or suction cup?" The recent bluetooth GPS recievers for iPad and Android are extraordinarily sensitive. I have a Dual Xgps150, and a Garnib Glo. Both are very fast to get a fix, and hang onto satellites even deep inside a room. The Glo picks up both gps and Glonass satellites. I prefer the Dual as it has an app thst will show how many satellites it is receiving - the Garmin Glo does not. As to mounting, they are all very small, and I have found best way is sticky velcro patch on unit, and one on dash, and all is sweet. John |
Q. I've deleted the WAC charts for Aus and downloaded new WAC but now I don't have a 'WAC' option in the 'Choose Map' panel.???
Th WAC worked at first but I changed to PNG wac's and when I came back there was no option to change back to OZ WAC. |
You may not be in Australia. That shows maps for your position.
Turn on the screen cursor (little cogs menu) and it will show maps for the cursor position instead |
I have tried as well and can't seem to get to work.
It always states that the take off weight is incorrect. [ Reading too high ] Also I must be missing something as I can't find how to enter MLW. Any help would be good |

Changes to Map View options available
Howdy guys,
I've just been snooping around my Oz runways latest update ( 3.3 4140 ) and something isn't right. I can no longer change the Map View options to select things like Points of Interest (IFR waypoints, GPS waypoints, User Waypoints etc ) on or off.......the option is gone! Where have these viewing options gone to? Cheers |
Shagpile?????? Hello.....
|
Nitty, do you have the little icon down the bottom right that is three circles with the dot in the middle next to the "cog" icon?
Not the very bottom row, the one above it at the bottom of the map. |
Sorry I'm dragging the chain a bit !
POI menu in cogs is *poof* gone ! Simplifying the menu's to make it easier to navigate. You can bring up all the map overlays by tapping on the icons on the left toolbar now. If you cannot see the left toolbar, there should be a little tab on the left you can tap or pull out. Tap on the blue circle to bring up all the AD's, etc. If they don't come up, you may need to zoom in a little (it auto-declutters by removing them as you zoom out so you don't have zillion ALA's showing for example). http://i.imgur.com/W42lcM2.png |
Ahhhhhh thanks Shags got it :ok:
|
Hey guys, just loaded the new update and I may have found a bug.
When I set sector entry to on, and direct to an airport with an aid the holding pattern comes up fine on the destination airport however if I now choose another airport as my destination the holding pattern only shows up on the original destination. It crashed a few times whilst I was playing with this. Ipad 2 with all the latest updates. Cheers |
Thanks mate - will look into it !
