Very sad indeed. I flew to Cairns on Saturday and the cloud was right in the valleys. More like the weather in January than April.

aroa 4th Apr 2023 01:59

Tis a bloody tragedy and it just keeps happening. Turning back is not so hard to do. This is the sort of decision making that determines whether your number comes up. What IS the cure for “press-on it is” a bloody great scare ?

This is all on the assumption that an engine failure didn’t drop them into the woods.
Reports do say the wx was very unfriendly.

Tragic. I'm reflecting today on the 2 times I've gone IMC inadvertently.

Once I was trying to get under it about 5000' and before I knew it I was in a spiral, popped out the base atleast 4000' AGL and straightened up. (120 hours total). PPL IMC training didn't assist, I don't remember thinking jump on the clocks. Startle and panic.

2nd time (700 hours TT?) I should have known better. West of CS post skydive jump, fuel caused me to push on and find a gap. There was absolutely no way (employment and ego) I could have gone to Mareeba which was wide open. Dumb hey. There's a missing link in all of this, it's all great having videos on the CASA website with a CFI keeping their options open, down a valley doing shoulder checks on their escape route but it ain't real world, especially in commercial ops (which I suspect this wasn't).

Condolences, they looked happy on all the social media posts , news articles , great life , active and a bright future ahead of them . Too many have had a place they needed to be on the other side of high terrain and weather and chose to push on . RIP .

RIP aviators.

I was like you, 230 hours...

I am sure most have had a scare at somepoint.

emeritus 4th Apr 2023 09:44

It was then and is still valid……your first 1000 hours are the most dangerous.

PoppaJo 5th Apr 2023 08:18

It would appear weather is only one part. So more details coming out, the PIC was not even licensed, didn't even have a RPL, potentially not even 50 hours. No Navigation training completed at all. Did they even have a SARTIME? Quite a few rules broken here. Some of the videos on this blokes social channels don't look that great either.

CASA need to tighten the bolts in remote areas? I understand it is quite challenging doing a ramp check in remote locations, stations etc. RPT operate into Prosperine. I know many RPT Pilots get nervous in some CTAF areas with training traffic, let alone someone with essentially no training at all.

Squawk7700 5th Apr 2023 08:44

Interesting that the original article suggested that ATC flagged the aircraft as overdue, so I and others naturally assumed a SAR time expired.

Capt Fathom 5th Apr 2023 11:04

I just think it’s sad that so soon after this accident, the media are publishing stories that may well be untrue. It’s not what the families need right now.
But they need to make it interesting don’t they.

Easy tiger, woo-up. Speculation, a flog who doesn't know for sure has mouthed off. May well be the case but we'll find out in 3 years or so.

One aeroclub where he did early training said that he did not complete his training with them and it sounds like the bulls have run with he didn't complete any training. Does not mean he didn't go elsewhere and complete the licence.

PoppaJo 6th Apr 2023 02:08

Gents correct. We will wait and see, I sincerely hope you are correct, hard to imagine anyone conducting cross country missions with such hours.

Was going to make some comment after this prang, who’s next ?. They usually come in threes.
A few days later a Robby crash kills a cattle baron and now an over run on an airstrip in the Abrolhos WA.
Better outcome from the last fortunately altho the aircraft doesn’t look to happy hanging into the briny!
Stay safe y’all.

I thought the same thing! Turns out it’s actually 4 as a BE58 had a gear failure landing at Rocky with no injuries after this crash and before the fatal helicopter accident.

And yet another “downer”…Baron forced landed and busted SW of Brisbane. Driver OK

Aero Club had him First Solo mid November. 6 weeks to get a license from CASA processed at the moment, let alone going from Solo to PPL NVFR. Connect the dots if you think this person has a license or not. It appears he had purchased a aircraft before that point, the question is then asked, what did the Aero Club and its staff know about this pilot and his activities beyond their walls. Did they know he was conducting potential illegal operations? I mean the guy was posting photos and videos all across the web, how could they not know. Why wasn't a CASA report lodged?

The videos are not great.

No Seatbelts
Animals in Cabin not secure
Children in Cabin no seatbelts
Low Level Flying
NVFR
Flying and filming during steep turns
Reports of never holding a CASA license.

I mean F*** me.

Like everyone is saying, wait 3 years and we'll know, primacy and recency will provide valuable guidance to those tempted to repeat.

Four huge mutts in the back in one video!

ATSB has dropped the investigation - and this time I completely agree with their logic. Why waste resources on someone who was unlicensed and had a DILLIGAF attitude to the rules and regulations. I am not so crass to say he deserved what happened, but you just can't tell some people.

Sucks for his passenger though.
